... again. Which is why I don't think it will happen very soon - polls show there isn't a large enough (or any) majority in the UK for joining *with everything it entails*, and your voting system may result in a government getting a stonking majority with cc 30% of the popular vote at any time 2/2

I'm not sure I follow. What do you mean by my opinion? I'd love to see the UK back in the EU family. Provided there is a massive majority there in support of joining, with no special deals or opt-outs, and with no real risk of the next government simply kicking up everything and leaving... 1/

But if you do want some nonsense, look at some of the arguments that the "pro-EU" side has been making: we can have a special deal because we're the UK; lead not leave; the EU should reform itself to entice us back, etc. Now that's some hilarious stuff and it still keeps coming, 8 years in

Not what I told you at all though, is it. It's that none of these other countries, in relatively modern times, ever had anywhere near the power and status Britain had in the world. I also don't see any of them steeped so deep in that nostalgia, either

I'm aware this is just a small part of the answer, but the other countries had not ruled over half the world and therefore did not have a post-imperial complex that would have excluded the idea of treating others as equals. They also did not have a union already at home where they were the bosses 🤷

Well, look at the polling numbers when UK voters are asked whether they like FoM for *others coming in*. Re: your Schengen comment, as long as the message is "oh, I'm sure Schengen/euro/etc. won't actually be required", that's cakeism. It shows you don't have a positive message for full membership

I suspect you're only a 40/60 nation as long as rejoin is sold as a blank canvas, exactly like Brexit was sold. But the minute the actual implications of rejoin are explained (a commitment to euro, Schengen, FoM, etc.) you're suddenly not a 40/60 nation any longer, no?

Exactly what “standards” are those, Robert? You collude with pornographers over property deals. You take dodgy donations. You whore for racists and christofascists for personal gain. You betray your political allies, friends and your country to sniff at power. You have no standards. You’re poison.

I’m in DC scheduled to give this talk today. But the organizers flagged slides in my deck that mention racism, structural gaslighting, New Jim Code and other themes that are off limits in the Land of the Free.

This whole thing is why the Butlerian side is so attractive—people who could have been doing something else instead have to do actual work to try to prove that an insultingly inherently absurd use case is in fact worthless

In fairness, if the author can "deliver a devastating rebuttal to all potential arguments" against their position, including the ones they are not even aware of yet and those that have not even been made yet because they are, well, potential, then they must be very intelligent

Thank you for providing these numbers. 70-74,000 deaths are a very conservative estimate. The numbers are in fact much higher as reported by various publications including The Lancet. If you remember Western media stopped reporting on the numbers to tone down the sheer volume.

Is it infuriating that the world’s most famous fascist regime used it as a backdrop? Sure. I’m angrier with the slimy subservience of the Greek government that allowed it.

I have no strong view on a preferred outcome here - “stop the massacre and destruction” feels like the immediate priority - but I invite readers to note the result of decades of nice libs wishing for two states is their own governments assisting in genocide, ethnic cleansing and massive destruction.

Well, if by Schengen you mean a tightly controlled external borderline with FoM within it, which we already have in the EU - if that is what you mean by "abolishing borders" - I can live with that 🙂👍

Ervin Sperla @ervinsperla.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Not if you guys really want to abolish all borders, no 🙂
010
Ervin Sperla @ervinsperla.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
I appreciate that. But now it sounds like what you want is not abolished borders in general but a system that gives *you more personal freedom of movement and residence. In fairness, I'd like that for myself, too
110
Ervin Sperla @ervinsperla.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
What does this point have to do with abolishing borders?
010
Ervin Sperla @ervinsperla.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
So when you say, as you did, that life with open borders would look like life looked like before 1900, it's a legitimate question to ask whether you'd like that
110
Ervin Sperla @ervinsperla.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
It's not meant as a gotcha, either. I just don't think that saying something existed at some point in the past is an argument for it to exist, or to even be possible, today
220
Ervin Sperla @ervinsperla.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
On a more serious note, is there a book that thought it through, what would actually happen if we tried to abolish borders starting from today's existing situation? And how would we even do the abolishing? I'd be interested in learning from such a thought experiment by someone knowledgeable

Ervin Sperla @ervinsperla.bsky.social · 06/10/2026

Tell me your country is far away from Russia without telling me your country is far away from Russia. Your position, while noble, is the luxury of someone who has multiple borders and millions of people between himself and an agressor. Imagine Poland, Finland or the Baltics trying that
