so at least according to the pop science of it all, this is the year that every cell in your body is newer than when you started your journey 😁

leaving the outside world a couple weeks after during the first phase, and re-entering it months later during the second, with a few letters and calls as my only contact in-between changed my perspective so did seeing a lot of those patriotic sign-ups lose their shit when daydreams got consequences

with hindsight, 9/11 broke the collective consciousness of the US due to the realization that international news could happen TO us and not just from us it made daily life first feel like a liminal echo of reality in shock, and then an increasingly horrifying black mirror of reality in response

half my class signed up before (me included), when it was easy for recruiters to make enlistment look like another route to college with some cash and job training bonuses. half ran to sign up after in the post-attack nationalistic haze. it made for even more of a melting pot than usual for basic

for one thing, my class had been half a class originally going to ft moore (then benning), half going to ft jackson, somehow all in a hastily added cycle at ft. leonard wood which are respectively the infantry training base, the base nicknamed “relaxin’ jackson”, and “fort lost in the woods”

accepting mediocrity-to-complicity while shutting out every candidate who would inspire turnout because they advocate widely-popular policies led to maga insisting we do so after years, across two terms, of candidates much more progressive in much redder places winning… is just willful ignorance.

honestly i’m proud of this to a stupid degree 🤓

an assortment of small tools: nail clippers/file, an adjustable wrench, a sewing kit, a small handle with insets for leatherman bits and a glass breaker, tick and long tweezers, tension wrench and bogota pick, tape measure and kevlar thread, and a pink skeletool with extension bar

the underside of this neatly packed bundle, showing a can/package opener and two small eyeglass/electronics screwdriver bits and a turquoise hair tie holding it closed

a small folded red paisley towel is under the closed lid of the set, topped off with a sparkly “bimbo certified” sticker with a hard hat 💅

Dolly did a big one for every woman who ever felt like less of a woman for not having children, and another big one for every woman who ever thought she couldn’t keep up with the boys, and another big one for everyone with an artist’s soul.

Dolly loved and mothered all of us who were told by our towns we were too fallen for loving and mothering. The queer. The slutty. The barren. “I know, honey. Just let it out.” —— I’ll leave you this. Dolly (and Linda and Emmylou) loving and mothering the wayward son. youtu.be/wWEQDyrbphE?...

Dolly Parton rose from poverty to stardom. She gave $500 to every student in her hometown who finished high school; she built hospitals & bald eagle preserves; her Imagination Library has gifted 300 million books to children. Roger Ebert met her and came away thinking she was a literal angel. RIP.

“In Dallas for the premier of '9 to 5', I had an uncanny experience, and on the plane home to Chicago I confessed it to Siskel: I had been granted a private half hour with Dolly Parton, and as we spoke I was filled with a strange ethereal grace. This was not spiritual, nor was it sexual. It was healing and comforting. Gene listened and said, "Roger, I felt the exact same thing during my interview with her." We looked at each other. What did this mean? Neither one of us ever felt that feeling again. From time to time we would refer to it in wonder.”

I am not speaking in hyperbole when I say that I genuinely believe that the world would be a better place if people had enough of a spine to treat bad actors in every community this way. However, with proximity to money and fame everyone’s descernment and morals just kinda evaporate.

the fastest ways to build community i've ever found is sharing food and sharing music together. people laugh when i talk about djing as a spiritual responsibility to the dancefloor, but it's no joke!

that’s like blaming the customers that stop going to a deli that only serves shit sandwiches if you ignore the broadly popular progressive issues (like m4a) that would benefit and motivate the majority of the base, you’re gonna see reduced turnout. politicians have responsibilities, too

you may well already know about it, but on the off-chance you don’t i think you’d enjoy visualizing black america i always love seeing the creative way you visualize things, and similarly i was impressed to see so many ways of showing data at intuitive scale that ive rarely/never seen elsewhere

the cover of “w.e.b du bois’s data portraits visualizing black america” showing a graph titled “the color line at the turn of the 20th century” and instead of an exponential scale to fit a standard bar graph, the larger segments are drawn in a spiral shape spinning towards a center point that makes the difference in total scale much clearer at a glance
