I see the now-conventional wisdom being trotted out in response to this comment, and I must respond. 1) A nuclear weapons program is enormously expensive. 2) The overwhelming majority of nations have signed the NPT. The political consequences of withdrawal are enormous.

Very interesting on public opinion on civilian deaths: "support for the use of force “decreased as intent shifts from accidental to foreseeable to intentional,” and that this pattern tracks moral reasoning rather than legal reasoning."

1/ Remember when we were told a ban on nuclear weapons wouldn't happen? Because the nuclear-armed states would never allow it. Well today, the #NuclearBan which came into force just over 5 years ago, already has the support of a clear majority of states eligible to join it!

🧵 I decided to take a look at how the chemical weapon denialists were responding to the latest news out of Syria about chemical weapons, and this reply from Aaron Mate says a lot about the credibility of the denialists positions.
Aaron Mate X post - "This article is misleading. Not surprising coming from an outlet that has pretended that the OPCW's Douma cover-up scandal and the dissenting inspectors who challenged it don't exist.

Speaking of which, this discovery -- more than one year after Assad's ouster -- happens to come right after it emerged that dissenting inspector Dr. Brendan Whelan won his case against the OPCW. In the process, the OPCW admitted to suppressing a key finding that undermined its allegation that Syria used chemical weapons in Douma. Perhaps the timing is coincidental.

In any event, Reuters says here that "hexamine, a stabilization agent known to have been used by Assad's forces in sarin production" was found.

The OPCW doesn't even say that. But even if they did, the discovery doesn't necessarily mean it was for sarin production. Hexamine would be expected in a war zone: it's the basic ingredient for the explosive RDX.

No matter how many "discoveries" follow, nothing will change the fundamental fact that the OPCW has refused to address the extensively documented suppression of the Douma investigation."

In addition, literal stacks of M4000 chemical bombs, used by the Assad regime to drop sarin on civilians in 3 recorded incidents, were found and photographed. Yet more evidence everything we published at Bellingcat based on our open source investigations of chemical attacks was accurate.

This new report from @nuclearban.bsky.social (www.icanw.org/the_cornerst...) hits on one of my biggest issues with the current state of diplomacy and disarmament. States need to recognize that their choices create the environment. It is not an abstract thing.

Have a nuclear weapon isn’t a war crime (though it should be), Iran didn’t have nuclear weapons, Iran wasn’t building nuclear weapons. And war crimes by others do not justify war crimes by oneself. The USA has around 1,500 nuclear warheads deployed (by New START counting rules) for perspective.
Donald Trump said he was "not at all" concerned about committing possible war crimes as he again threatened to destroy Iran's bridges and power plants if Tehran did not meet his deadline of Tuesday 8pm ET (midnight Tuesday GMT) to reopen the strait of Hormuz.
"You know what's a war crime? Having a nuclear weapon," he said.

There are lots of interesting ideas about why the US is scattering landmines in Iran, but if it's like anything else happening right now, this is the result of a bunch of ignorant fools making ill-informed decisions. And civilians, as always, will suffer the most.
