I've read Mars House already (I always buy and read everything Natasha Pulley writes), but I've never read the Slough House books. Are they worth reading if I've already devoured the tv series?

A somewhat janky digital rendering of the 60s version of the USS Enterprise rendered in greenish grays with orange highlights on the front of the nacelles and the deflector dish. There is a burst of whooshing rays behind it but the background is the default natural paper color I’ve been using and not space black. Reddish-orange text around the ship set in a Star Trek TOS font reads ‘Maybe it will happen today’.

Welp, I just learned about the noperthedron! Had to sift through some AI-slop articles whose images were clearly wrong (e.g., not convex polyhedra), but this Quanta article seems legit. www.quantamagazine.org/first-shape-...

At my 'why you shouldn't use AI' lecture for the new MSc students, they spontaneously volunteered udm14 and ecosia (it plants trees!) as alternatives. I can't say this crop of MScs is universally anti-AI, but I think enough of them are, and vocally so, that there's a healthy cohort peer pressure.

Started to get het up and post a grumpy remark about leg hair and the point of fashion not being uniquely about attracting the opposite sex. Then I read the article. It's about identifying an EVOLUTIONARY adaptive advantage for males to grow facial hair. That'll teach me to respond to a headline.

Great book, but it struck me as a pretty straightforward adult fantasy book. Not even YA, and not remotely middle-grade.

Oh, also at our local meeting, a dispute came up about when the letter K entered the English language, and in particular its use in Insular Majuscule. #medievalSky can you offer some sources on the issue?

happy pumpkin season! (art from 2014)
a black and white scratchboard drawing. Alternative poster for "It's the great pumpkin, Charlie brown"
It depicts a vast pumpkin patch in which Linus is standing holding a sign. He is looking up at the full moon. In front of the full moon we can see Snoopy in his aviator costume on his doghouse.
All the way in the distance, there is a house and we can see three children in halloween costumes coming out the door.

Currently reading The Mortons, by Justine Larbalestier and Scott Westerfeld, and it is apparently scratching my enormous-murderous-family-with-HARD-CORE-induction-and-training-of-its-youngsters itch. I read it because I read a personal blog review of it that made it seem cool. Word of mouth ftw!

If u/IntrusiveGas can demonstrate that Geoff the turtle's native language contains contrastive voiced retroflex affricates, we have more to discuss than the pronunciation of Geoff the turtle's name. #phonetics #linguistics

Ergative Absolutive @ergative-abs.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
I think it's iffy in the best of cases to insist on a pronunciation requiring allophones that are not contrastive in a speaker's own language -- and those best of cases exclusively involve situations where the named person's own language requires those contrasts to avoid, like, slurs.
