Adaptive deep brain stimulation in Parkinson disease: clinical implementation and outlook
Nature Reviews Neurology, Published online: 29 June 2026; doi:10.1038/s41582-026-01239-2Adaptive deep brain stimulation (DBS) promises to revolutionize the treatment of Parkinson disease with neuromodulation, and regulatory approval has enabled its use in clinical practice. This Clinical Outlook considers the principles behind adaptive DBS, current clinical recommendations and practical considerations in its implementation, as well as remaining challenges.

🧠 New statement from @network-alba.bsky.social! 🔬 #ALBA calls for fairer, more transparent visa processes and more inclusive scientific exchange. It’s time to remove barriers and enable all scientists to contribute. ✍️ buff.ly/b88cBSY 👉 Sign: buff.ly/uSrfb5q @sfn.org @ibroorg.bsky.social
🧠 New statement from #ALBA!

🌐 Scientists shouldn’t be held back by borders. High visa fees, unclear procedures, and unexplained refusals continue to limit participation in global science. These barriers disproportionately affect researchers from mobility-restricted regions and hinder collaboration, innovation and equity.

🌍 The ALBA Network calls for fairer, more transparent visa processes and more inclusive scientific exchange. It’s time to remove barriers and enable all scientists to contribute.

1/8 New preprint alert! How are signals from the heart encoded in the brain? What could be the functional implications of cardioception? We found that neurons in the posterior insular cortex are precisely tuned to heartbeats, and that this cardio-insular coupling supports emotion coding in mice.

Cracking the neural code for emotional states
Rather than act as a simple switchboard for innate behaviors, the hypothalamus encodes an animal's internal state, which influences behavior.

Emotionally driven behaviors may engage broader neuronal activity than previously thought—challenging the idea that facial expressions are largely reflexive and involuntary, a new study finds. By @natmesanash.bsky.social #neuroskyence www.thetransmitter.org/emotion-proc...

Facial expressions less reflexive than previously thought
A countenance such as a grimace activates many of the same cortical pathways as voluntary facial movements.

Why are the majority of patients affected by Alzheimer’s Disease women? Recent work suggests that hormonal changes associated with menopause, in particular oestrogen levels, may be a key factor. 🧓📈Read about this in our latest blog by Emily! 🔗 www.womeninneuroscienceuk.org/post/alzheim...

SWC researchers reveal a new way that the brain learns. The second learning system is frequency-based and may explain how the brain forms habits and why they are so hard to break. Full story: www.sainsburywellcome.org/web/research...
Triggered cell death in the tail of the striatum using a viral strategy. Each image is an average projection of a part of the striatum. Areas are colour coded based on their absence of neurons. Original colours are random to indicate the amount of animals that do not have cells on a particular region. The average projections then creates a mix of those original colours.
