New PM, same old media: Burnham is now simultaneously being accused of spending money he hasn't got on the policies he announces *and* not spending enough money on the policies he announces.

Interesting blog on the consequences of OfWat giving Thames notice that the undertakings have not been delivered on and that it will treat them as terminated after a period. “Indeed it specifically recognised that it would be under a duty to enforce if the undertakings failed.”

I’m with David…
I’m convinced that the security and prosperity of the UK depends on institutionalised, deep and strong relationship with the rest of Europe. I’m absolutely convinced of that…

So when the government says we want a rest of our relations with Europe, I think that’s a good thing.

Nothing sums up the death of accountability like the prospect of Nigel Farage in No 10 | George Monbiot

“Now it’s getting ridiculous, maybe we should pretend to care about scrutiny and honest politics” says The Times, having singularly failed to hold Farage to account on anything for the last decade. In a saner, less corrupt and racist world, Reform would have no hope of governing at all.
Under the Spotlight
Nigel Farage has too often seemed resentful of questions which apply to all political parties but if Reform UK is serious about governing, it must anticipate transparency

Leader about Farage’s claim his phone was hacked by Russia/foreign actors

Extract:

Now Anna Turley, the Labour party chair, has contacted the Metropolitan Police and the National Cyber Security Centre asking for an investigation into Mr Farage’s claims, in the national interest. While Labour may indeed be relishing the Reform leader’s discomfort ahead of the tightrun Makerfield by-election, it is also entirely appropriate that the hacking claims are investigated. If they are accurate, it is a matter of national security. If not, then Mr Farage may well have thrown the equivalent of a lit match on the smouldering gorse of the £5 million donation row.

Scrutiny is the stuff of honest politics, yet lately it has not served Reform well. The social media history of Robert Kenyon, its Makerfield candidate, has divulged some lurid prior views on women and gay people, which the party defended as the utterances of “a straight-talking, effective voice”. In 2019 Mr Kenyon also appeared to say he had not voted for Brexit, yet Reform said he did. In recent days Zia Yusuf, the party’s home affairs spokesman, has contradicted Robert Jenrick, its Treasury spokesman, by insisting foreign nationals could be deported purely for living in social housing, which Mr Jenrick had disavowed. Such internal policy fissures are likely to become more evident as Reform battles its more right-wing rival, Rupert Lowe’s Restore Britain, for the electorate’s affections. Yet the public deserves clarity and certainty, and the press is right to demand it from Reform, as from other parties. Mr Farage must stop resenting scrutiny, and start anticipating it.
