i once read a "restorative justice" paper about catholic priests outed for CSA and how it's so cruel and terrible to ostracize or make them feel bad for doing something that "has been considered normal and harmless throughout history, think of the ancient greeks etc." think of their emotional pain

like trespassing in an empty building, or writing in a library book. these actions are "not allowed" and therefore are abstractly "immoral" to do, but the only real actual person who's affected is the person who does it, and the only dimension in which the affect is felt is in their own moral status

i've been trying to articulate for years how the discourse around rape and abuse treats it as an abstract matter of moral taste. there are abstractly "im/moral" ways to treat a thing, but the moral weight rests of whether it's "allowed" or "not allowed," not on the victim's inviolable personhood.

in this story she is about as relevant as a "dead wife" in a nolan movie, in the sense that her existence does not extend beyond the hero's emotional backstory. she is not a real person. she has no interiority, no subjective experience, and CERTAINLY no rights, least of all any right to justice.

Im a prison abolitionist and a firm believer in rehabilitation and reconciliation. Jacob will always be a person who did a horrible, evil thing. But if the goal of punishment is to rehabilitate and to allow growth, we have to examine whether it was successful. Jacobs response and his broader body of work signal to me he not only understands and recons with what he did but gas used it as motivation to change and be better. Barring any other things coming to light, he's kinda a poster child for what I am advocating for. It's
dissappointing, but if deny peoples capacity for change and growth, we remove any incentive for it.

I wanted to be somewhat empathetical as this was something that happened in the past. And people can change. But seeing him actively covering his tracks has made that impossible. If he changed as he claimed he can just own his past deeds and live with the consequences. Instead he chose to run.

I keep seeing people talk about how earnest his apologies were, but there are so many red flags... He used Bluesky, didn't say anything to the people on Patreon paying him monthly, and recently disabled the feature showing how much he was earning from the platform (probably to hide the exodus and prevent a snowball effect).

I liked his videos a lot... the way he wrote, reasoned, communicated his emotions and ideas (and obviously I wasn't the only one).

But he's moving like a snake now. Jacob is very smart and understands perfectly our society and its social dynamics, which is why I'm sure he knows the safest way to keep the comfort his online persona gave him is to stay silent, let fans who are lost in the parasocial side of his work defend him, and wait for everything to settle. Our news cycle is broken (how many days until the next scandal involving a creator?)

But I don't think it's a coincidence that MinnMax dropped him before his statement, I don't think it's a coincidence that Nebula deleted everything about him without saying a word. Those close and/or in a position to hold him accountable talked to him in private and asked for way more than we did (and could) my guess is they weren't satisfied at all, since they've all left.

I'm nobody to ask anything about anyone, I don't even know why I wrote all this but I don't think you can still be the empathy and feelings guy when you've done what he did. And lied after, a lie by omission is still a lie.

In the end he's gonna come back and have his career like before (for a few weeks he'll probably have some pushback in his comments but it will die down) that's just the world we live in.

survive. It's always a free choice made because the rapist feels entitled to objectify and violate their victim. It should be penalized more harshly because of that, socially and legally speaking. That last line really nails it. There usually aren't any consequences for abuse or sexual assault from men. The second an allegation is made, people start trying to come up with a reason why it's false or not applicable, even when the rate of false accusations is always much lower than the rate...
