we have a dog and cat food pantry at the shelter, this is necessary because one of the biggest reasons a pet gets surrendered is "can't afford" and that is a heartbreaking decision for someone to have to make

This is tied for the purest distillation of Bruce Blakeman’s essence. One of the two Bruce Blakemanest moments.

Gentle reminder to critics of philosophy: there are plenty of legit reasons to get mad at philosophy. You don’t have to invent a field to get mad at.

1) a single poll 2) taken while the Dem candidate was off the trail and the conspiracists were not yet widely understood to be utterly ridiculous 3) with a more Republican sample than the previous Marist poll

I spent so long resisting the very idea of Blexas, and now I think you’re all panicking for no reason about a single poll that has the Dem behind. *double checks post* I’m sorry, that has the Dem still ahead.

My worst replies on here are better than my worst replies on Twitter, but they are extra annoying because I operate with a baseline assumption that people on here are at least normal enough not to believe that Tom Hanks and Wayfair are drinking the blood of children.

I recommend getting verified on Old Twitter in the few months they were handing out verifications to anyone who’d ever written an article. It worked for me!

A new, and (I think) improved variation on how it’s Talarico’s fault that the Right went bananas over an easily disproven conspiracy theory. bsky.app/profile/shoe...

The response of more urbane Republicans to the Talarico nonsense is that it’s a pity MAGAwent all in on a conspiracy theory because it his the real problem with Talarico: what kind of man doesn’t campaign with the flu.l?

The starchier water is good for saucing, pasta goes in the water all at once, you can just use tongs to throw it in the sauce skillet with no colander. Easier to handle than pot. Drawback: if you don’t use die cut pasta, you have to be a little more vigilant that it doesn’t stick together.

On folk-psychological innovation
Brett Karlan & Evan Westra
Abstract
Human folk psychology is strikingly innovative: across time, cultures, and domains of social life, we display a seemingly unbounded capacity to carve up the mental realm in new and creative ways. We argue that, when properly understood, this feature of human folk psychology has new and surprising upshots for debates in cognitive ontology. After exploring the cognitive underpinnings of folk-psychological innovation, we show its challenging but useful implications for classic debates between realists and eliminativists. Specifically, we argue that the innovative character of folk psychology motivates both a new form of eliminativism (what we call bottom-up eliminativism) and a new form of realism (what we call arm's-length realism).

I understand how some of you will view this—and I’m not sure you’re wrong—but several lgbtq and teens I know are heartened by this kind of thing. It makes them feel like the public accepts them in a time they’re not always feeling that.

I looked up at her face and saw she was significantly older than I realized. But I told her I’d give her the student discount anyway. She laughed again and gave me her credit card, which said CYNDI LAUPER. She thanked me and left still laughing.

I gently indicated that these were expensive, and asked if she were a member of the museum (they got discounts). She wasn’t. “Do you have a student ID?” She threw her head back and laughed loud and said, in the most Queens accent that ever Queensed, “Thank you, honey, but I ain’t a student.”

Young Helena Bonham Carter vibe. A shock of bright yellow hair. Many young people, especially international ones, did not know how expensive art books can be. They’d bring them to the counter and their faces would collapse in disappointment when they saw the price. I wished they were cheaper.

I have been in this store clerk’s situation before! With a much different outcome. I was a clerk at the MoMA bookstore. A customer came up with hundreds and hundreds of dollars worth of art books. I didn’t look very closely at her, but her outfit was Bohemian and eccentric in the extreme.

I think centrists might be a tadmore convincing that their path is The Way, or that X is good, if they didn’t come on here with an attitude like, “Ugh, here you go, you judgmental angry losers, I’ll cast my pearls before you swine.”

Why don’t you try to convince people rather than assume the worst? I’m guessing you think the left alienates moderates by being overly judgy before a discussion can be had.
