They deserve more than I have to leave them, and I write in the hope that, someday, somehow, I will be blessed with enough success to leave them with something when I’m gone. I feel I owe it to them for all the hours I spent doing marking and lesson prep, instead of being there for them.

His approach to fantasy is a huge influence. Tolkien of course is an immense inspiration and a challenge if you hope to emulate him. (I dream, dear reader. I dream!) The most important influence and inspiration for my writing is my two sons. Both of them struggle with life….

The Tolkien and Alan Garner. I read Garner first, tearing through about 2/3 of The Weirdstone of Brisinghamen in an afternoon when I was stuck in the school nurses office with an asthma attack. I didn’t find it again until I was 14 or 15, when I read everything up to The Owl Service….

…tributes to the sort of story she loved. Next, I’ll put Poe, Bram Stoker, and Conan Doyle. The three were early influences on me; I read Poe and Doyle voraciously. My first attempt at a novel was directly inspired by The Hound of the Baskervilles and Dracula. And I reread Dracula ever year.

…the most self-centred person I ever met, but for someone born in 1895 she was amazingly un-racist and un-bigoted. And she was the first and best story-teller I ever knew. She could keep dozens of kids entranced with her tales, and the adults she met, too. A couple of my short stories are…

Pull up a chair, #PretendPanel, and allow a boring old guy to chew your ear off a bit. The inspirations get more significant as I go, if anyone makes it to the end. My first inspiration is my Grandmother. She had a secret addiction to betting on the ponies, undiagnosed BPD, and was …

America is toxic and broken and should never be trusted again. We were foolish to do so in the years since the Second World War. Friendship with the USA exposed us to unnecessary risk, made us enemies of people with whom we had no tangible disputes, and did us little good. Go home Yankee!!

Mostly for myself. Partially for my late Grandmother, who was a story teller, too. A couple of my favourite stories are exactly the sort of thing she would have loved. For readers who love historical setting, tales of the weird and strange, folklore, outsiders, vulnerable people #pretendpanel

I write to tell the sort of stories I like. Sometimes it is to make a point. Sometimes it is to preserve some bit of local lore or history that might be lost. Mostly, I write for me. #PretendPanel

That’s the worst!! I tend to avoid “no simultaneous submissions” publications. It would be different if they responded in 3-4 weeks, but the long wait is too excruciating if you only submitted to them

Just got word my flash story "'Swonderful. 'Smarvellous" will be published in 2027. It was submitted to at least 10 or 12 magazines and journals before this. Sometimes you have to have faith that the story is good, even in the face of rejections. #Writers #WritingCommunity #FlashFiction

#ReaderSky My short story "Stanley" has been published in the anthology Mixed Bag: A Dark Short Story Anthology, from red Raven. When a small time thief is asked to obtain an item for a wealthy collector it seems like easy money. Stanley should have asked a few more questions before taking the job

My take is that a novel or short story is an attempt to recreate story-telling in a print form, and that if a story doesn’t work aurally, it doesn’t work. Stories are *meant* to be spoken aloud. Poems are *meant* to be recited.

Yes I have #pretendpanel , though fewer times than I would have thought given how often I've been on stage. I've read short extracts of prose a couple of times, and taken part in poetry readings. It's not often that I've been in my own stage play, but I have done some voice work for my video games.

There are some authors whose works I cannot manage to read, but I've enjoyed audio versions of their books. I loved listening to Alias Grace, for example. I confess that, as I've gotten older, I find it hard to concentrate on other people's writing now -- I want to work on my own #pretendpanel
