Carney highlights the Indigenous consultation done ahead of this decision to list a crude oil pipeline in the national interest. Which is interesting, because the National Chief of the AFN has explicitly said the major projects office “don’t know what they’re doing when it comes to First Nations.”

I'm stuck on this. Carney's principal secretary is a conservative & good pal who argued that more Indigenous people should leave reserves "to build lives in southern Canada, integrated into one of the world’s healthiest, safest, [&] most rewarding societies.” It says a lot about Carney. #CdnPoli
Blanchard’s opposite is Principal Secretary Scott Gilmore, a former foreign service officer, a columnist and a long-time friend of Carney’s. Gilmore was initially hired to advise on foreign policy and security, but his new job involves more political strategy, which has some Liberals puzzled, as Gilmore’s last big foray into politics was an attempt to revive the Progressive Conservative Party.

I think it's ill-advised and anti-democratic to introduce an omnibus bill, cite a crisis, and rush major changes to labour and environmental law. It's going to provoke aggressive resistance and risks, ironically, slowing down the projects the government is so keen on. It's going to be a huge mess.

Reminder that Carney has cut funding for Natural Resources Canada, Environment and Climate Change Canada, Indigenous and Northern Affairs, and Indigenous Services. And he has rolled back climate protections, abandoned emissions targets, and is building more pipelines.
Carney:

"The wildfire situation has escalated significantly over the last three weeks across the country, and particularly in Northwestern Ontario.

Thousands of people have been forced to evacuate their communities, not knowing if their homes will survive.

On behalf of Canadians, I want to thank the brave firefighters, first responders, Indigenous and local leaders who are working tirelessly to keep people safe.

Our government is in close contact with provincial, municipal, and Indigenous partners and stands ready to provide any additional support as needed."

The new law will give Prime Minister Mark Carney's cabinet authority to greenlight any pesticide that ministers feel is in the interest of economic or national food security. The legislation doesn't define or clarify what those security interests would be.

Environment and health organizations, along with expert scientists from 13 universities, have denounced the legislation, saying it marks the largest overhaul of the country's pesticide rules in a generation.

The current BC forest minister has said a lot of outrageous things, but this might take the cake. Blaming caribou and calling them stupid for getting scared when their habitat is destroyed by logging is such a callous worldview to hold. coastmountainnews.com/2026/06/10/f... #bcpoli
A passage from an interview with BC forest minister Ravi Parmar. It reads:

"Parmar was critical of caribou for how they grow “spooked” when disturbed and exhaust substantial energy running away over long distances.

“That’s usually one of the reasons that leads to their demise, and that’s one of the reasons why we’ve had to defer harvesting in different parts of the province, because they need a vast area of land,” he said. “Not the smartest animal, that’s for sure.”"

Nice to speak to @geoffdembicki.bsky.social @desmog.com about leaked documents revealing the capacity of planned fossil plants for Canadian data centres + my estimate that if they became operational, they'd cause enough emissions to wipe out 15 years of progress www.desmog.com/2026/06/11/m...
Wonder Valley is a “gargantuan” proposal that would involve constructing one of the top-ten biggest gas plants proposed right now in the world, according to Norway-based energy and climate analyst Ketan Joshi. A separate Gryphon Digital proposal in Alberta meanwhile requires four gigawatts of gas-powered energy, while the Beacon AI project is proposing two gigawatts worth of gas, the document notes.

Natural gas is plentiful and cheap in Alberta, said Werner Antweiler, an economics professor at UBC’s Sauder School of Business.

“It’s coming out of the ground, it’s not transported anywhere,” Antweiler said. “So you don’t have to pay for the pipelines —it’s locally cheap. That basically gives you a lower marginal cost than if you build a data centre running on natural gas somewhere in the United States where you have to actually get the natural gas pipeline there.”

The Privy Council document lists about 15.5 gigawatts of new gas capacity planned for data centres in Canada, although itthe ISED document notes that “it will not be possible for Alberta to connect all data centre projects in the short term” to the electric grid. Carney’s new AI strategy puts forward a lower estimate, suggesting that Canadian projects will require 5.5 gigawatts of power.

If the high-end scenario of 15.5 gigawatts materializes, it could cause an increase of somewhere between 33 to 63 megatonnes of annual greenhouse gas emissions, Joshi calculates, “effectively undoing the past 15 years of emissions reductions in Canada.”

But even at the lower end the climate impacts are daunting. “I am genuinely shocked by the size of these projects,” said Joshi. “If a tenth of these fossil-fuelled data centres were to be built, the increase in Canada’s emissions would be noticeable and substantial.” a chart showing the increased, about 5 to 6% in total, of canada's emissions from this amount of gas-fired data centre capacity
