i guess i could gut an lcd that's the right size/shape and use a light guide to illuminate it such that i could still see out? but then i'd need a much more complex setup to drive it compared to neopixels and it'd all have to be built into the head since there's not exactly room on me elsewhere

a little while back i did some looking into cosplaying votv kerfur omega since i think i'm built like that and could probably finagle the head/face using cleverly laid out neopixels but idk. the grid that makes up the face is really dense and some expressions seem like they'd just be infeasible

when i last shopped for new stuff a year-ish ago it was dispiriting, anything less than large fit very poorly and large and up kinda wore like a men's small. somehow that's changed? idk if it's just mass redistribution or if my shoulders actually shrunk but what i tried definitely fit way better

there, now my car is marginally less likely to burn down for no reason

harness before, covered in nasty ass splice tape and questionably assembled. i mean SOME of the splices were twisted together appropriately and not just sort of mashed together into a weird ball of copper. it is in the void because poor planning means the only pic i have has it on top of something with PII on it lol

harness now, butt splices on and tested for good continuity

one functioning car radio. total repair cost: $3 for some 20-16 wire nuts, $20 for the bigass nylon pry tools to take the dash apart and most of my morning

now i have no leads at all. just before i start reassembling everything and admit defeat, i check that antenna wire again but this time i shake the harness a bit while i measure resistance. and it goes wild, up to 300ohm at points. so i take it apart and redo the joint, 0ohm on test as expected

they’re all good, except for the antenna relay power which is hooked up despite my car not having an external antenna, nevermind a retractible one. it has continuity but seems to show a very slight amount of resistance

so i pull the radio and spliced harness, map the pinouts and test the power wires for continuity (the speaker feeds would cause an error message on the radio if they were bad so i ignored them as a possible issue)

the wiring is remarkably ok though, the harness splice is all taped with that rubber electrical tape that doesn’t really rot and still has some pliability so that’s nice. at least this thing wasn’t about to burn down

that was an adventure. first i open it up and discover the radio has not been secured by a single screw and whoever did it lost the bolts that hold the whole dash cluster in, as they used the wrong kit and also sucked

i kind of felt like an asshole until the journeyman who assigned us both the job asked me w/ slightly incredulous tone “does he know how to use a broom?” while we were on break. lol. it’s a skill! being efficient and not stirring tons of nasty construction dust into the air requires technique
