Another day, another page from a manuscript unique in world history. This is the "Cambridge Yiddish Codex," the earliest known collection of Yiddish texts (1382 CE). It preserves Jewish homilies, animal fables, and a lost poem of the German epic tradition, "Dukus Horant." It was discovered in Cairo.
Light brown waterstained paper folio with about 20 lines of Yiddish text in brown-black ink, much of which is faded. The background is white and a small red caption reads T-S 10K22 (https://cudl.lib.cam.ac.uk/view/MS-TS-00010-K-00022/23).

We don't know for sure how it got to Cairo. But there is plenty of evidence of commercial connections, including a thriving book trade, between European and Egyptian Jewish communities. It's also possible that a Yiddish-speaking Jew moved to the Middle East, as we know some did by the 16th century.

I can still sing these words to the tune given to it on the Radio 4 1980s production of LOTR which festured Ian Holm as Frodo, Bill Nighy as Sam, Michael Hordern as Gandalf, and John Le Mesurier as Bilbo. What a classic production!

Merry asks who made this path along the hills. Strider’s answer reminds Sam of one of Bilbo’s old songs, and Sam sings the first few lines: ‘Gil-galad was an Elven-king. Of him the harpers sadly sing: the last whose realm was fair and free between the Mountains and the Sea…’
