PS. Do you know eegedu.com? It has some useful demos there and might save you from replicating some content that's already good/interactive

1/ Can AI help researchers check whether published social science results actually reproduce? In our new PNAS paper, we tested this directly in the AI Replication Games: 288 researchers, 103 teams, and real replication packages from quantitative social science.

The teaching term starts earlier over there... but I plan to visit the UK and attend some meetings. Maybe some EPS ones.

That said, I will be around at Canadian conferences much more now, and particularly look forward to catching up with friends in Edmonton.

Over the years, my perspective and career priorities have shifted, and this move feels like a better fit for the next stage of my life and work. I will still visit the UK and Europe for collaborations and conferences, but I obviously won’t be around as much.

Nottingham has been a major part of my life and career. It has given me valuable opportunities to develop as a researcher, teacher, colleague, and mentor. I’ve learned a great deal here, worked with excellent colleagues and students, made some amazing friends, and done a lot of work I’m proud of.

After nearly a decade at the University of Nottingham, I’ll be moving on this summer. As of July, I’ll be returning to Canada to take up a position at MacEwan University in Edmonton.

Can you share the syllabus or any other teaching material? I've been planning a "Psychology of Roleplay" seminar course and there's probably some overlap

There are a few good books and guides, my (biased) suggestion is the text I wrote for this very purpose engra.me/books/matlab/

Thrilled to share our paper on the formation of brain shape in human newborns, just out @natneuro.nature.com: tinyurl.com/2ty4ef43 Using #fractal analysis of #MRI data from the developing Human Connectome Project (lnkd.in/dxeHbJX6), we show that brain shape closely captures infant age and genetics ⬇️

There definitely are many people using it with time-series data, I know there's a literature with EEG brain activity. For brain structure, so much of the literature is 'size' (volume/thickness/area), but glosses over what shape the volume is.

Christopher Madan @engra.me · 29/12/2025
About 10 years ago I came across 'fractal dimensionality' as a measure of brain structure. Studying it's utility with healthy aging, clinical populations, and across species has led to 19 papers since then. The most recent paper is now online at Nature Neuroscience! www.nature.com/articles/s41...

You can do this right now: Think of a person who wrote a paper you love, whose work influenced or helped you, or has made your professional life better. Search up their email address. Shoot them a quick email of thanks. It means so, so much. This is a rough time of year, share some joy.

Three Surprises From Attempting To Replicate Recent Studies in Top Psychology Journals

How has the replication rate of psychology studies changed in recent years?

Are we still experiencing a “replication crisis,” where only 40-60% of results replicate when the study is conducted again?

I've had this issue too, though a few years ago. Coauthored preprints were fine, but all single author ones were privated and had to individually be made public again.

Yes, after one talk I gave a few years ago, Valerie Reyna came up and we chatted for quite a bit :). That was a few years before that study with the trial-unique outcomes.

Christopher Madan @engra.me · 06/02/2025
Ah, I now see the second part of your question. Even more reason to see how that funding changes with age. An on-going study is varying the number of trials to see where memories shift from episodic to gist. I should do a follow-up of that and vary age. :)

Christopher Madan @engra.me · 06/02/2025
Thanks for asking here! I appreciate that I didn't leave much time for questions. All participants in the work I presented were young adults. Most studies were with undergrads, some were online samples. I've done some work on aging and extending these tasks to older adults is a future plan.
