But a boss fight isn't intrinsically a test, or a pure test of skill, or anything really. All a boss fight is, at its core, is a transition. An end of a chapter, a change of pace, w/e. The classic boss of Bowser in SMB1 isn't a huge challenge, but simply serves as a capstone, like a greater flagpole

There are a myriad of ways of achieving a codebase that, when compiled, results in the same ROM. LLMs will often bruteforce this process and end up with a result that, while it does compile to the correct ROM, it is not readable or understandable by a human or even the LLM itself.

This is why decompilation and porting efforts are usually done by different groups of people: one group works on understanding and documenting the game's code, while a different group can take that documented codebase to aid in their porting efforts.

The part where there's been a speedup with AI when it comes to these efforts are decompilations, but with a catch: decomps generally have matching game's ROM when compiled as a primary goal. However, the entire point of decomps has always been documenting the code and understanding how it works.

It's the polish and making a good and sustainable project for the wider public where the difference is. It's the part that actually takes far more time. People have already shown they have no interest in these kind of efforts if they don't have significant advantages over emulation.

What these people are unaware of is that getting the game running is basically the first step of the journey and not the end. This is why I argue that as far as recomps go, AI hasn't provided any sort of speedup. Making a barebones recompilation was always easy and required very little time.

Any claims you've seen about AI speeding up this "tedious" process are false when recompilation is involved. We've had multiple instances of human developers being able to get a recomp running in less than a day back when these tools were launched two years ago. A polished result takes much longer.

Recompilations can use decompilations, even incomplete ones, as sources of information to make the necessary changes for a port to behave properly on the target platform, including enhancements necessary for high refresh rates, widescreen, QoL and more. They do NOT require complete decompilations.

Not all ports are recompilations, but recompilations are a type of port that use "static recompilation", an approach that automatically converts the code from a game into code that behaves the same to another platform. It essentially skips the need to do a complete decompilation altogether.

I still see a lot of confusion about what decompilation, recompilation and ports are and what level of effort is involved in each type of project. It's important that people understand the difference, as recompilation took a drastically different meaning that when it was originally introduced.
