I appreciate that Dolly Parton refused to participate in "dress respectability" and, by her own account, modeled her aesthetic after a town "tramp," who she thought was beautiful. She separated aesthetics from character and understood "classiness" to be about how you treat people, not how you dress.

the story that the right wanted to tell here is about DEI run amok - institutions so obsessed with diversity that they embraced an obvious fraud. that story gets it backwards. to Cambridge et al Arday was a PR stunt. they hired him as a symbol, meant to shield them from criticism.

I enjoyed this MT by Lucy Ellmann www.theparisreview.org/fiction/8497...
Men together validating male military mathematics: that, for each death, dozens more must die. Or, in Gaza, tens of thousands. Men together, firm in their understanding that life has to be gruesome. Men together—how resilient they are, how snappily they forget!—moving straight on from one death orgy to the next. Men together, from newsmen to priests to mass killers, exulting in the seriousness of it all, the finality of death. Men together yearning for DEFCON 1. Men together being proud that only by the grace of men together does anybody live to see another day. Men together viewing the reduction of whole countries to smithereens as a legitimate aim. Men together finding restorative justice, reparations, and war crime tribunals totally lacking in pizzazz and spontaneity. Men together grousing that peacetime offers no excitement, no drama, no heroes. Men together, nevertheless, taking charge of peace talks!
