I saw this comment and felt an overflow of rage. I understand wanting to look on the bright side and hope for the best, but no matter what, the Skydance merger is gonna result in THOUSANDS of jobs being lost. So saying “lul I don’t care, it don’t effect meeeee” is simply disgusting. Fuck off.

Don’t get me wrong, box office is important and I too wish this movie was doing better. But given just how much love and passion it clearly has and how culturally significant it is, I think it’ll stand the test of of time far better than the likes of Toy Story 17 or Mario References: The Movie.

I think I have toxic rosy retrospective nostalgia for that late 2023/early 2024 period where we got these three in the span of a few months. Like yeah, those were the days.

And by extension, other films hardcore animation fans should be focusing that energy on. I get it, negativity is fun and it gets views, but why devote yourself to the movie/studio that clearly doesn’t give a shit as opposed to expressing positivity for other works that actually do?

My mind is actively rooting against this movie. Not just because of the obvious, but also if it ends up getting into Best Animated Feature, it’ll likely be stealing that slot from Tangles, one of the most beautiful animated films of the decade that deserves that recognition.

Julian is a lovely little film from Cartoon Saloon, with lovely animation and a charming story about being yourself. Fans of the studio’s work will not be disappointed, and I can see it speaking to a lot of kids as well! PICK IT UP GKIDS

Tangles is devastating, heartfelt, and hilarious all at once. An absolute marvel of animated storytelling and a poignant dissection of the hole that losing a loved one, mentally and physically, can bring. An absolute must watch. 10/10 Wish the theater didn’t have fucking audio issues tho!

#ForgottenIsland is an absolute winner! Beautiful friendship story drenched in rich Philippine culture, and stellar direction/animation that puts every other mainstream animated film this year to shame. Not sure about BAF, but @jacoboutlook.bsky.social will eat it up and that’s all that matters.

So Coyote vs Acme is doing well. That’s awesome. Animation fans? Next you oughta buy tickets to Forgotten Island. Somehow afraid the hype on that one has died down but if you’ve been pissed about Disney and Sony killing films about female friendship and Asian mythology, we need to make this a hit!

Nimona genuinely has the best use of licensed music I’ve seen in an animated film since Shrek 1. Grrrl Like, Alright Alright, Because I’m Awesome, Gold Guns Girls, all bangers that perfectly complement the movie’s punk rebel vibe while miraculously fitting in this world. This is how ya do it.

Notice how of these films thrive on their themes about perseverance and overcoming adversity, even against a seemingly impossible enemy that can’t be defeated. That’s how much artistic expression is worth fighting for.

I can confirm, this is an issue across all screenings in North America. It’s not the theaters, it’s GKIDS. Seeing this lack of care from a company I look up to is kinda crushing. Was able to get a refund on my ticket but I still ended up wasting money on going to the theater. Very disappointed.

It's really sad to see the hate for Lesbian Space Princess since I actually met the directors 😭 They were really shy, super nice and just amazed they were able to get a wide release. They were big allies & struggled over including what eventually got read as transphobia. They welcomed criticism.

Queer art needs to be perfect or else you will be dog piled. Queer art can't be perfect, or else someone will start dog piling it to make themselves feel good. The fact so many queer critics want to be the next Lily Orchard to become famous for criticizing queer art is kinda sad.
