This breaks my heart. This research project has been going on for 30 years and studying the long term effects of Type 2 Diabetes (a condition which >10% Americans have) and the effectiveness of various interventions. All because the the funding goes through Columbia on the way to the orgs running it

Is there any standardized way of measuring the quality of / comparing higher education systems? I offhandedly referred to the U.S. as having the best higher ed system in the world, and have been receiving a lot of push back. If you have any evidence for or against my claim, I’d love to see it!

The way to kill "reshape" Really though, economists could benefit from understanding relational databases. Both for efficiency and, perhaps more importantly, to reduce the scope for errors due to duplicating the same information (that may subsequently change)

I agree this sucks but the average US wedding costs $30,000 which you could instead spend on saving 10 lives via malaria treatments (according to givewell). Unless we should also Eat the Average American I don’t know how to think about where to draw the line

My economist husband spent the last couple days, jubilantly stating “Saturday the holidays begin! Vacation starts! No more work!” This morning he woke up excited: “no work today!!” He is now making slides for an intro trade class that doesn’t exist “for fun! This isn’t work!!”
