MARC is not always the ideal format for cataloguing rare print collections, because it is difficult to fully express the relationships between materials and collections, persons, places and other entities. Copy-specific data such as custodial history can become hidden. #RLUKDSF

But this UX feedback is definitely something libraries should take on board. E.g. present a 'simple view' of the record with an option to 'view more' so it's less overwhelming to the user.

Emma Booth (she/her) @emmabooth.eurosky.social · 11/09/2026
There's a sense of "the more data the better" in some library metadata because it's trying to serve the needs of a plethora of users, from undergrads to expert researchers, inc those who dont know what theyre looking for so need to see connections between things beyon keyword searching!
120
Emma Booth (she/her) @emmabooth.eurosky.social · 11/09/2026
I completely agree - the connections or links between entities asserted by the metadata can be subjective or even misleading, particularly for Subject Headings. Language & terminology matter. We're not always in agreement with the LC authority file!
020
Emma Booth (she/her) @emmabooth.eurosky.social · 11/09/2026
As metadata moves between systems (& formats), data can be lost. Libraries lobby vendors for improvements, but, yes, often we have to fix errors ourselves! It can feel a bit sisyphean!
110
Emma Booth (she/her) @emmabooth.eurosky.social · 11/09/2026
They ingest 'provider data' from publishers & content aggregators. The quality & accuracy of their metadata is contingent on the quality of the source data + their enrichment processes.

The vendor of Primo (Clarivate) is a massive multinational data analytics company. Library systems (like Alma & Primo) are just part of what they do.
110
Emma Booth (she/her) @emmabooth.eurosky.social · 11/09/2026
Happy to help - that was the intention 🙂 We all use web-based searching tools without knowing what's going on 'under the hood' + there are hundreds of years' of library cataloguing/metadata practice that can affect search & discovery, especially as the bibliographic universe keeps getting bigger!
010
Emma Booth (she/her) @emmabooth.eurosky.social · 11/09/2026
The "Inchbald, Mrs., 1753-1821" example is one to take up with the Library of Congress - that is the 'authorised form' of the name in the LC Name Authority File (so libraries basically have to use it) id.loc.gov/authorities/...
id.loc.gov
110
Emma Booth (she/her) @emmabooth.eurosky.social · 11/09/2026
Of course this functions better for well-known persons with properly 'fleshed out' Name Authority Records (or Wikidata) and it is contingent on the "link" to that correct Person Entity being present in the metadata for the publication. - So errors can occur without good name disambiguation processes
110
Emma Booth (she/her) @emmabooth.eurosky.social · 11/09/2026
The "Person Info cards" are a feature of the discovery layer Primo VE - they use Linked Data to link to 'related information' regarding a person (such as an author or historical figure). The library can turn it off in their configuration settings.
110
Emma Booth (she/her) @emmabooth.eurosky.social · 11/09/2026
I think the wrong Name Authority Heading has been used - very fixable if you report it to the library's metadata or cataloguing dept - also probably an error not introduced by the library but by "vendor-supplied" metadata produced using an automated process that has not undergone name disambiguation
020
Emma Booth (she/her) @emmabooth.eurosky.social · 11/09/2026
This is a step towards creating a Knowledge Graph that connects entities (Works, Persons, Places, Topics) in a 3-dimensional manner on the web to support discovery beyond "known title" searching. A search for 'Fanny Price' will find 'Mansfield Park,' 'Jane Austen' and other related entities.
120
Emma Booth (she/her) @emmabooth.eurosky.social · 11/09/2026
Looks like the Library of Congress Name Authority "Price, Fanny (Fictitious character)" has been added as a Subject Heading. id.loc.gov/authorities/... In Primo, there are 'Linked Data' features such as 'info cards' for Name Authorities; some connect with Wikidata www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q3066481
