Like this. (This one isn't ours but it's an exact match.)
A 1950s-era Moffat brand stove. It is white with chrome features. There are four doors on the front, with silver handles, and white knobs at the front edge of the range. There are four burners on the left side. There is a control panel for the oven on the back raised lip of the stove.

The stove in this house is from the 1950s. We mostly keep it turned off at the breaker because otherwise it makes noise. Yesterday it turned itself off while we were making Thanksgiving dinner. Then it charred the hell out of the mushroom Wellington. I'd still rather have it than a "smart" one.

It was probably earlier, though. My kindergarten teacher told my mother, “I don’t know what I’d do with a class full of Emilys. She’s a little beyond me.”

Cast on Wednesday for my second attempt at the Harley pullover, this time in Malabrigo Rios. (Bailed on the first because drawstring holes were off centre and the yarn too fuzzy to show cables well.) Now the collar is done and blocking and I can't keep going until it's completely dry. Woe!

We had a flock of sheep near our place last week. One of the guardian dogs played hooky to come visit us. He and MizC were smitten with each other. He presented his belly before we walked him back up to his ewes, and when he went back to work, he was all business again, barking at us to stay away.
A large white dog stands outside a wooden door open to the outside. He is smiling.

New working paper: the Norwegian wealth tax was a huge success. The "exodus" of wealthy people never happened (less than 100 individuals left). Tax revenue increased by 71.5%. No changes in business activity or investment. www.nber.org/papers/w35854
Taxing Entrepreneurial Wealth: Evidence from
Norway, 2021-2025
Marius A. K. Ring
WORKING PAPER 35854|
DOl 10.3386/w35854
ISSUE DATE October 2026
Whether imposing higher taxes on business owners adversely affects business activity by constraining investment and inducing capitalist flight is a central question in the ongoing debate on how to tax the ultra wealthy. To shed new light, I exploit a series of related Norwegian reforms during 2021-2024 that increased dividend tax rates, removed migration-related capital gains tax loopholes, and nearly doubled the effective marginal tax rate on business wealth. These reforms spurred international debate and, allegedly, an "exodus" of Norwegian billionaires (Financial Times,
2023). While I document clear effects on migration, these responses are concentrated among the top 0.1% of the wealth distribution and mostly confined to 2022 and 2023. My results indicate that at most 100 individuals left due to the reforms. I find no evidence of significant outmigration or reduced inflows of startup founders or inventors. I estimate that absent any outmigration, wealth tax revenues would have increased by 75% from 2021 to 2024. Reform-driven outmigration lowers the revenue gain to 71.5%. My findings further show that outmigrating owners' firms remain economically active and do not reduce investment. In a broader set of analyses, I examine whether business outcomes are affected, regardless of whether owners outmigrate, since firms may reduce investment both due to liquidity constraints or distortions to owners' savings decisions. I compare firms owned by Norwegian individuals subject to the wealth tax with firms owned by foreigners and other tax-exempt entities. By merging historical ownership data from Orbis with the Norwegian shareholder register, I perform these analyses on both Norwegian and foreign-domiciled firms.
Across settings, I find no evidence that Norwegian-owned firms pay out more dividends or invest less after the reforms,…

The contractors are coming back on Monday after two quiet weeks of not having extra people in our house all the time. They're going to start by drywalling the laundry room and installing the dryer that's been sitting there for at least five years. 🎉

This by Courtney Maum is where I am too. I am grateful to her for the words...
For me, the subject of AI detection is an ouroboros. I’ll speak only for myself, here is my opinion. I didn’t ask for artificial intelligence. It’s not something I need, it is not something I desire. And yet, it barged its way into my life and stole all of my books. All of them. Stole them. Trained off of them. Did not compensate me for this theft. So now, AI can write a book like me, because it stole my own work and learned my breed of humor and satire. So if someone runs an AI text detector on my creative output, it will probably “test positive” why? Because AI is a contaminant that has embedded itself into my work by stealing it and using my own work to perpetuate itself. It will test for itself and find AI there because it AI is a virus that has contaminated the DNA of my current and future writing—a form of intellectual rape. A kind of colonization. A raging plague that some gatekeepers are opening the door for.

If you ask me what I’m currently working on, the answer is nothing book-length. I’m not going to publish a new book in this current landscape. That’s a stance of privilege, I recognize that. And I can’t hold this stance forever, I can hold it as long as I have savings from my last book.

This current literary climate isn’t acceptable. It is not acceptable to have a thing thrust upon us that takes absolutely everything, and then be forced to prove that we are not the thieves.

This should be so obvious that it doesn’t need to be said, but given what kind of weekend it’s been on here, apparently it does: If you don’t want old rapists running the world, in office, in the board room, making decisions for all of us get comfortable with “ruining” young rapists’ lives

Already made two of these thneeds but both were in smaller amounts of heavier yarn. Started a third in 2022 in a skein of Wollmeise Lacegarn in the Tollkirsche colourway. It's been my go-to when I need something mindless. Now it's almost done and I already feel a little bereft.

The image is of a four panel comic.
The first panel shows Sarah, the protagonist, holding a red ball labeled "A SILLY MEME".
The second panel shows Sarah taking the ball and going through a door labeled "GROUP CHAT".
The third panel shows a group of women sitting together and consoling one woman in the center. The woman in the center is saying "...And that's how it happened. It's been the worst day of my life."
The fourth panel shows Sarah standing in the doorway behind them awkwardly holding the red ball.

This house was originally built as a three-season cottage, but there's a big electric furnace that can also burn wood. It works well but the ducts are only to the first floor, where the biggest window in the house had only a single pane of glass and the rest of the windows weren't sealed properly.
