So exciting!! Tanya is an amazing person (I was SO fortunate to have her for plate tectonics during my time at UCSB). Her stories about going to sea before women were accepted on ships are 🤯 and she's an inspiration for seagoing women scientists.

Key misunderstanding I want to get ahead of: NCAR isn't really a government agency like NIH or NSF. It's one of the largest NSF grants in history, and is given to a non-profit org called UCAR, whose job is to make NCAR exist (www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/...). That means the buck stops with NSF right now

Stunning footage from earlier today, when the new Kilauea eruption covered the USGS Webcam 3, which is situated in the Halemaʻumaʻu crater near the southern rim of the much larger Kilauea caldera. This *isn't* what the people of Pompeii saw. But it's not very far off.

Living this decline is exhausting. As academic staff, I ensure that investments in instrumentation are maximized for edu + research. Labs like ours will sit quiet w/o staff + leaders to capitalize on investments we've ALREADY MADE. Not to mention the generation(s) we're losing of future innovation.
