I feel the need to note that the Romans don't really present 'power' (potentia, vis) as their chief virtue. Instead, the Romans were "always harping on fides ['faith, trust']" (Dioc. Sic. 23.1); Cicero gives the virtue where Rome surpasses others as pietas (piety, Cic. Har. resp. 9.19).

Today's lecture (9/29 posts at 11:30am) also includes my favorite Roman heroine Hortensia, who defended the legal status of women to Octavian, Crassus, and Antony and won her case.

A roar of loneliness. For #ReliefWednesday, this beautiful late C4 BCE Etruscan terracotta askos. Its deeply modelled mane echoes the frescoes of the François Tomb where it was found. The tomb's dispersion proves that scattering a collection destroys its context. #AncientBluesky 🏺
ZOOMORPHIC LION ASKOS FROM THE FRANÇOIS TOMB, LATE C4 BCE. VILLA GIULIA, ROME

A terracotta vessel shaped like a crouching and snarling lion, resting on a narrow black-glazed base decorated with a wavy pattern. The surface combines painted and heavily modelled relief-like decoration, featuring deep tongue-shaped locks forming the mane and short hatched brown brushstrokes indicating the hide. The open mouth ingeniously serves as a secondary pouring spout. Discovered in 1857 in Vulci, this beautiful object is currently on loan from the British Museum, serving as a stark reminder of the tragic dispersion of the grave goods of the François Tomb. While the famous C4 BCE frescoes were stripped from the tufo walls, objects like this askos were scattered through sales to foreign collectors and institutions. This permanent dismemberment of a unified context is the curse of Italian cultural patrimony. It mirrors the fate of medieval polyptychs broken into isolated panels, Roman mosaics ripped from their architectural settings, monastery libraries sold off piecemeal, and intact family archives pillaged for individual gain. When private greed triumphs over the public good, the original meaning of these masterpieces is gravely diminished and the connective tissue of our history is lost.

Dear Homer, I evaluate standout voices across literary genres, and the unique premise you’ve built in the Iliad caught my attention. The handling of historical fantasy, rich world-building, and high-stakes action through Achilles and Helen creates a resonance that is provocative and deeply engaging

Every once in a while scholars want to bring Latin back as a universal or common language. Usually with the hope that it will unify people. I wish it was that easy, but I fear people would just fight in Latin. www.lrt.lt/en/news-in-e...

Could Latin become Europe’s common language? A young group thinks it can
It may sound improbable: Latin, often described as a dead language, becoming a common language understood across Europe.

Here's a hymn he wrote 🔥
The land our fathers left to us,
 Is foul with hateful sin:
When shall, O Lord, this sorrow end,
 And hope and joy begin?
What good, though growing wealth and strength,
Shall stretch from shore to shore,
If thus the fatal poison-taint,
 Be only spread the more?
Wipe out, O God, the Nation’s guilt—
 Then swell the Nation’s power,
But build not high our yearning hopes,
 To wither in an hour!
No outward show, nor fancied strength,
 From thy stern justice saves;
There is no liberty for them,
 Who make their brethren slaves!

Guys, I am a frequent user of canva stock photos and I am so frustrated with their current library. So much AI slop started getting mixed in with the regular photos and it's like a bunch of creators must have taken their photos back because the selection has gotten slim.

✨Dancing with Apollo✨ This stunning Roman fresco comes from the Villa Moregine which is located just outside Pompeii. The figure wears gorgeous diaphanous robes in blues and seems to float against the red background while strumming a lyre. #FrescoFriday
A Roman fresco portrait of a floating Apollo. The link to Apollo is suggested by the lyre and the golden wreath worn by the figure but some wonder if this might also be a portrait of Nero, given his fondness for musical pursuits. Photo credit to Chapps via Flickr.

A student asked about the biggest codex and you know what? I did know! It’s the Codex Gigas. But my favorite fact about this behemoth is that it took a lot of asses—160 donkeys to be exact—to produce this one book. Now that is a true book assessment 🫏 www.loc.gov/item/2021667...
Title

Devil's Bible.
Other Title

Codex Gigas
Summary

The Codex Gigas (or Devil's Bible) is a large 13th-century manuscript from Bohemia, one of the historical Czech lands. Renowned for its size and its striking full-page rendition of the devil (found on page 577), it contains a number of parts: the Old and New Testaments, two works of Josephus Flavius, Isidore of Seville's Etymologies, the standard textbook for teaching medicine in the Middle Ages known as Ars medicinae (The art of medicine), the 12th-century Chronica Boëmorum (Chronicle of the Bohemians) of Cosmas of Prague, and a calendar. Of special interest are the sections that testify to the Bohemian origin of the manuscript and its eventful history. At the end of the 16th century, the Codex was incorporated into the collections of Habsburg ruler Rudolph II. During the Swedish siege of Prague at the end of the Thirty Years' War (1648), the manuscript was taken as war booty and transferred to Stockholm.
