Almost contemporaneously, I remember reading at least one of Isaac Asimov's SCIENCE essays, "Hot Water" or "Cold Water" both from 1971. H2O is one of the absolutely funkiest molecules in the universe. Hydrogen #1 at 74% and oxygen #3 at 1% in the universe bodes well for life wherever it's found.
