The Egyptian military has taken responsibility for Saturday's airstrikes in River Nile State, claiming it the latest "in an ongoing campaign against illegal gold mining within its borders." #KeepEyesOnSudan

The “a man of his time arguments” are always bullshit because if you were, say, a Taíno, you probably thought Columbus was terrible regardless of what people in Spain thought. But yeah, plenty of people in Spain thought he was too brutal too.

Sometimes I think these people must live in perfect little bubbles, where the prospect of marriage & heterosexuality as places of mutual desire, love & equality is a tangible reality. But that's probably not the case. They experience the same reality as I do, but have huge blind spots, willfully.

Everyone missing the word "pressures" in the title. Yeah, calling women's body parts gross is counter to attraction to women .. but not so much under a patriatchal man-centric view of sex. The pressuring for sex, or for a sex act, is rapy and part of the same entitled misogynistic approach.

Today's quick update [Oct 10]: - Kordofan Observatory: at least 16 civilians killed over past 48 hours in SAF drone strikes on Ghubaish, West Kordofan. - Sudan Doctors Network: 4 civilians killed in SPLM-N (Alhilu) shelling on Kadugli, South Kordofan. #KeepEyesOnSudan

It's as if the first option is more appealing to them *because* its coercive & violating, and being with women otherwise isn't desirable to them. Nah, I must be wrong. After all, these are just poor lonely men in need of love and sympathy.

I make a vegan version, veggies instead of minced meat in the stuffing. It's a weird dish: * get an assortment of vegetables * core every last one * fry the removed insides * add rice + a bunch of seasoning * stuff the gutted veggies * cook everything in red sauce 4 hrs later, viola .. it's done.

Had mahshi (محشي) leftovers for lunch and it tasted so good I wanted to cry. Given how time-consuming it is to prepare this dish, i always regret making it halfway through (usually at the step of coring potatos) .. but it is so worth the effort.

Implicating religious teaching, culture & society at large is rejected. Assigning blame to men was resisted, with a reflexive defense of our shared male relatives. I don't quite get the last part. I used to reject calling it rape myself, but I don't remember this ever being a sticking point for me.

these men 'rapists,' at blaming them solely, or even at all, for acting so terribly. She had no issue blaming the women for "allowing" it, for staying, for not believing they deserved better. I'm trying to parse this: Calling the behavior bad is a good starting point. Naming it is a no go.

their husbands. She succinctly described how devestating it is to live like this: with constant feelings of humiliation, fear, disgust and disconnect with one's own body. I couldn't stop her to point out that this is marital rape. With some proping, my guess is that a line is drawn at calling all

CW: Rape I was having a discussion about marriage with a somewhat conservative relative. She was shocked at hearing the term 'marital rape' & refused to believe it's a thing that happens. Then she procerded to complain that it's so common for women to feel compelled & coerced to have relations with

things people identify as "misandry" typically fall under two categories: 1. the ways patriarchy punishes men for being bad at masculinity 2. women and gender minorities pointing out the ways men oppress us

very narrow. If the issue here was that people just considered rape to be a horrific crime, they won't be treating 'lesser' forms of it as a nothing or punish the victims for it.

Em @emcsquare.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
The issue with the widespread rape, with the lack of accountability, the dismissal of the victims .. The diagnosis is not that people generally think rape is a terrible crime & all who commit it are evil and must be killed. The definition of the crime of rape & its victim on which people agree is

Humans have an ability that is equal parts amazing and terrifying to forget and move on. They be witnessing atrocities committed right before their eyes, to their neighbors or in the streets they walk everyday .. and keep living their lives as if nothing happened.

Men's entitlement to extracting sex from women at any cost (to the woman), ignoring all signs of distress or pain or inability to actively participate, doesn't come from some abstract "biological" cause but a culture that reinforces sex as a woman's only function. We have not progressed past that.

people talk about "media literacy" usually in the context of "needing the villain to look into the camera and tell you they're bad," but it goes the other way too--people will fly into a rage and start insisting "fiction has no effect on reality" if you DO acknowledge context, subtext, framing, etc.

Pile-ons caused by out-of-context quoting do happen, a lot. This case wasn't one of them. I hate this cowardly approach of weaseling out of responsibility. Either accept the criticism, or stand by what you actually said. Why pretend everyone misunderstood while not changing anything?

In short, all these policies intended to make life difficult for migrants & asylum seekers do actually work. I hope those responsible are happy. They succeed in making everyone feel miserable, rejected, like they live in a hellish limbo .. they end up "self deporting" back to danger in large numbers

This is Europe, though? This is why European imperialism happened at the same time as its liberalisation. Why Leopold II was hailed as a reformer in Belgium in his time while doing what he was doing in Congo. Europeans love the positive personal benefits of someone else's oppression.

Sometimes I contrast the situations of people I know who escaped the Sudanese war with the usual narrative about war refugees: that such escapees are the most legitimate type of migrants/asylum seekers. The reality that they're treated the worst, by almost everyone and every system ever.

One may say think these aid agencies are really effective, they manage to help so many people on very low budget. Cool theory. Another possibility is that they provide very little help & consider that a job well done! Why am I angry at the people who are, at least, trying to help?! I shouldn't.

Em @emcsquare.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
I don't know about how they choose to express this. Have the aid ever been at an adequate level? Close to adequate, with <$50 /person/year, covering only less than 20% of all those who were displaced .. really? Almost none of the people I know who are struggling has received/is receiving aid.
The cost of keeping the IOM system running for a year to support 305,000 people is $15m, and the agency would require $42m to return to the level of aid it was able to provide in 2024.

Also you can't guarantee that a politician will deliver on their promises. That why consistency matters, i.e. it's reasonable to expect that a politician who wants to regress the rights of one minority won't care about the wellbeing of other minorities while, say, they try fixing climate crises.
