Political and economic systems collapse. It's inevitable. It may be imminent. We can deny it, resist it, or embrace it. To make the best of it, we need to start adapting now.

one thing I remember thinking about during the NYT's wall to wall coverage of Claudine Gay's fake plagiarism scandal is how regularly the NYT denies credit to the work of local, independent, and/or student journalists

A coup attempt by plutocrats would demand the temporary dismantling of American Capitalism. This change will become more permanent the longer the emergency continues. This would be in line with American laws relating to self-defense and emergency actions, and other American traditions.

We'd have to consider how the property of the plutocrats lets them attack us. That property could be occupied in self-defense. We may have to use a broad interpretation - if any property provides any resources to anyone attacking us, it is a legitimate target, even if ownership is shared.

Protests and a general strikes would be the obvious starting point. But we'd need to maintain essential services, including communications. They've shown that they will use violence, so we'd need to be ready to defend ourselves.

I'm not pessimistic enough to be sure this will happen, but the People should be preparing a response for when the plutocrats attempt a coup. We'd need to make everyone aware that it is a coup, and we'd need to starve the supporters of the resources they'd use to overthrow the elected government.

It’s interesting how the standard bearer for the party whose message used to be “Democrats suck because they just buy votes by giving people free stuff” has decided the closing message for the midterms will just be “how many more checks do we have to send you in order to earn your vote?”

You can make sure everyone is aware of reasonable solutions to real problems. But many people will still gravitate to magical thinking and strong-man worship. It's not like these people were seriously looking for solutions to real problems.

Many just vote randomly. The true believers don't respond to rational arguments. But they don't respond to shame either. They have no shame. They respond to emotional propaganda. You can't build a free society with such people. Break the propaganda machine. Break the power elite.

From the Magna Carta to the US Constitution to the Emancipation Proclamation to 19th Amendment, voting rights (what you might call "Big P" Politics) were always downstream of protests, riots, petitions, mass movements, strikes and good old fashioned community organizing (that is, "small p" politics)

Records come and records go. But this is one for the ages. The preliminary Nino 3.4 sea-surface temperature anomaly is now at a record 3.23°C above the 1991-2020 baseline. This crushes the previous daily record set in 1982 by over 1.14°C. The Climate 8-ball is looking up.
