Had a little medical procedure today that has me in the hospital overnight. Everything went well and I should be fixed. But the hospital is boring and I can’t sleep, however listening to @hcrichardson.bsky.social talk about politics is like having a friend in my room with me, and that is lovely.

These are the instructions my Nanny kept from the polio hospital my dad was in for almost a year as a boy. The had to have entire hospitals for kids with polio. I can’t believe we are on our way back to this. #vaccines #polio

A typed sheet of instructions from a polio hospital in the early 1940s. Some of the rules include that parents could only bring washable toys for their kids and all toys would be destroyed when the child left the hospital and that parents could only visit for five minutes at a time, twice daily. It is heartbreaking.

I’m preparing for a hopefully fun vacation next week and the stress of that has me about to back out of going. It’s also put the state of the world on the backburner in my mind which should be a relief but really just makes me feel like I’m a horrible person. There’s no way to win here and it sucks.

Last week very few students actually did work during the open lab class time I gave them, so this week I said “fuck it,” cancelled class and graded while the three students who were committed to the work came in and worked. It was way more fun and now I’m done grading for the semester.

I did some math today about the #NEH Preservation Assistance Grants that were cancelled. The grant usually funds about 65 institutions a year and the max award is $10K. The base cost for a 2025 Cybertruck is about $70K, so the whole PAG program costs less than 10 Cybertrucks. It’s so infuriating.

This grant program, which has a total budget of less than a million dollars per year and helps approximately 60 small institutions care for their collections each year was officially cancelled for 2025 and may never be back. I am heartbroken. #neh
