help I'm obsessed with the warring mother robins who unhappily share a nest
facebook post with a collection of photos and video of a huge clutch of robin eggs and two adult robins squished together in the same nest:
"I’ve had robins on my porch every year. This year has been quite interesting! On Sunday I found two eggs in the nest and by Tuesday afternoon there were 8 eggs! I had never seen that many. So I did a little bit of research and found out that 8 eggs means they were likely laid by two different females. So I set up a camera to see what would happen. And much to my surprise there are two females caring for the eggs. They are NOT happy to be sharing the nest. But they are stubborn and neither mother is willing to leave her eggs. I read that usually the robins are so territorial that one mother will leave. During the day they kick each other out of the nest taking turns sitting on the eggs. Then at night they both have such a strong instinct to sit on the eggs all night that they BOTH sit on the nest. One bird sits on the other. They fight and peck at each other constantly! Although they seem to have come to some sort of understanding and tolerate each other much better now. Here are some pictures and videos of these very stubborn and devoted mother robins. I can tell them apart by their markings by their eyes. And I can tell they are both females by the way the mothers settle onto the eggs and cover them with their brood patch.
Have you ever seen two females sit on the nest at the same time!?

Big news from the mudflats! The UK’s oldest known Oystercatchers - aged 41 and 43 - have been discovered on The Wash. That’s three times their species’ average lifespan! Legends wade amongst us... 😎 A reminder of why the East Coast Wetlands are so special: buff.ly/rgnjIeg
A striking Oystercatcher strolls along wet, rocky mudflats, its vivid orange bill tipped with a tiny morsel of food. The bird’s black and white plumage glows in the low sunlight, and a small silver leg ring is visible, marking it as part of a long-term study.

It's driving me up the wall that legal definitions are increasingly based on (at best) primary school-level takes on complex concepts (like 'biological sex') which, I don't know, you should probably consult actual experts on. Also: trans rights are human rights; no LGB without the T(QIA+), ever!

Colossal’s bungled wolf announcement isn’t a conservation win. It’s a sad reminder of how the offensively rich want to foist their vision of the future on everyone. My latest for @slate.com

Those Dire Wolves Aren’t an Amazing Scientific Breakthrough. They’re a Disturbing Symbol of Where We’re Heading.
We shouldn’t be celebrating “de-extinction.” We should be focused on the species that are currently in danger.
