Just found an old Victorian book about charity and dehumanising "the poor" I've been saving up for on my shelf! Now to spend that money on a whole other old Victorian book about charity and dehumanising "the poor"! (So many to choose from)
Page heading: Chaotic Charity (73)
There are many institutions, very excellent in their way, without which it is difficult to see how society could get on at all, but when they have done their best there still remains this great and appalling mass of human misery on our hands, a perfect quagmire of Human Sludge. They may ladle out individuals here and there, but to drain the whole bog is an effort which seems beyond the imagination of mist of those who spend their life in philanthropic work. It is no doubt better than nothing to take the individual and feed him from day to day, to bandage up his wounds and heal his diseases; but you may go on doing that forever, if you do not do more than that; and the worst of it is that all authorities agree that if you only do that you will probably increase the evil with which you are attempting to deal, and that you had much better let the whole thing alone.

The assessment did not consider the crocodiles but instead looked at "how the course would perform under a range of conditions, weather patterns, water levels and flood risk at both Games time and throughout the period leading into the Games".

🧵St Thomas the Martyr Hospital York was founded, c.1391, for the 'maintenance of poor persons of either sex dwelling in the neighbourhood of 'Mykyllythbar,' and especially for hospitality by day and night of all poor travellers and sick poor passing through York.'
This 1782 antique line engraving, titled "Micklegate Bar and the Hospital of St. Thomas, York", was drawn by artist Thomas Hearne and engraved by William Byrne and Thomas Medland. The print depicts the medieval gateway of Micklegate Bar in York alongside the old Hospital of St. Thomas, showing a horse-drawn carriage and pedestrians in the foreground. Noticeable in front of the main gate is the outer barbican, a defensive structure that stood until it was demolished in 1826. It was published as part of the creators' celebrated documentation of British antiquities and dedicated to the Reverend Dr. Richard Kaye. Image: Wellcome Trust
