Today is the feast day of St Manchán. Manchán was an important figure in early medieval Ireland. He is thought to have been born somewhere in the north-east of Ulster in the early 7th century. He went on to found a monastery at Lemanaghan. His relics were housed in this spectacular shrine.

A black-and-white portrait of Lottie Dod (Charlotte Dod, 1871–1960), the legendary English athlete who remains the youngest singles champion in Wimbledon history, winning her first title in 1887 at age 15. Captured from the waist up, Dod stands at a slight three-quarter angle facing right while looking directly forward. Her expression is calm, earnest, and determined, featuring a soft mouth and steady, dark eyes. Her dark hair is pinned up neatly under a rigid, light-colored cloth cap with a short brim, sitting straight on her head. She is dressed in traditional Victorian tennis attire, wearing a structured, high-collared white blouse with voluminous leg-of-mutton sleeves and pleated detailing across the chest. Her waist is tightly cinched by a broad, dark belt that fastens over her dark skirt. In the lower right foreground, she cradles a vintage wooden tennis racket with a distinct asymmetric, flat-topped frame and tight natural gut strings, which extends diagonally across her body. The background is a soft, mottled gray studio backdrop, drawing all focus to her silhouette. The lighting is soft and even, highlighting the texture of her clothing and her complexion. The composition captures the classic, grainy texture of late-19th-century photography, creating a dignified, historic mood that underscores her pioneering status as an early sports icon.

French marine biologist Jeanne Villepreux-Power invented the first glass aquarium for scientific study in 1832. Her sealed tanks (with aeration & water stability) enabled live observation of sea creatures, which was revolutionary in marine research. She was born #OTD in 1794. #WomenInSTEM
Sepia-toned 1861 photograph by André-Adolphe-Eugène Disdéri of Jeanne Villepreux-Power (1794–1871), pioneering French marine biologist and inventor of the glass aquarium. A vintage, black-and-white studio portrait of Emily Warren Roebling (1843–1903), the pioneering historical figure who effectively managed the engineering, construction logistics, and daily project operations of the Brooklyn Bridge for over a decade following the incapacitation of her husband, Chief Engineer Washington Roebling. Framed in a tight oval vignette against a dark, solid background, she is shown in a three-quarter profile facing left, her gentle smile and steady gaze conveying a dignified, poised, and confident mood. Her dark hair is styled in an elaborate, high braided crown typical of late 19th-century fashion, accentuating a classic teardrop pearl earring and a dark gemstone necklace. She wears an elegant, formal off-the-shoulder evening gown featuring layers of gossamer tulle and a dense, decorative corsage of dark silk flowers along the edge. The clean overall composition highlights her enduring historical significance as a foundational leader for women in STEM and engineering management.

Angle of Vision
Robert Rendall

But, John, have you seen the world, said he,
Trains and tramcars and sixty-seaters,
Cities in lands across the sea –
Giotto’s tower and the dome of St Peter’s?

No, but I’ve seen the arc of the earth,
From the Birsay shore, like the edge of a planet,
And the lifeboat plunge through the Pentland Firth
To a cosmic tide with the men that man it.

Ulmann’s timeless images focused on preserving vanishing folklore, framing her subjects with immense dignity rather than focusing on poverty. She died #OTD in 1934 at age 52, leaving a legacy of 10,000+ historic glass plate negatives. #photography (2/2)
A side-by-side photographic diptych featuring two portraits by Doris Ulmann from her ethnographic journeys through the American South. The left panel shows a striking, deep-toned portrait of a rustic Southern mountaineer. Wearing a rumpled dark jacket, buttoned vest, and a weathered, wide-brimmed hat with a small hole, the older man stands before a dark background with a sack or coat draped over his right shoulder. His intense gaze and prominent white mustache convey rugged endurance. The right panel is a touching portrait of an elderly Black woman identified as "Granny" Minton, photographed near Abingdon, Virginia. Seated outside, she wears a light, collared button-up top, her face resting pensively against her right hand in a posture of profound contemplation. Her greying hair is gathered softly, and her left hand holds a wooden staff. Both compositions employ dramatic lighting to honor the dignity of rural working-class individuals without focusing on destitution.

She faces the camera directly with a subtle, composed, and knowing smile, her warm eyes conveying intelligence and resilience. Her dark, straight hair is parted down the middle, framing her face and cascading over her shoulders. She wears prominent, ornate, drop-style dangling earrings that feature concentric circular designs, catching the light. Her blouse is light-colored and adorned with delicate, patterned floral embroidery along the neckline. The background is softly blurred and indistinct, focusing all attention on her powerful presence. The overall mood is dignified and reflective, serving as an impactful historical testament to press freedom and courage.

⚒️ Bronze Age high-tech! Nearly 4,000 years ago, this ingenious stone mould could cast five different sizes of flat axe! Cutting-edge technology from a time when metal was replacing stone, bone and wooden tools! Found in Shropshire in 1961. Shrewsbury Museum 📷 by me #FindsFriday #Archaeology
My photo shows a carved stone axe mould made from Carboniferous Grit displayed on a clear acrylic museum stand. It is roughly a cuboid rectangular, weathered stone block with a recessed axe-shaped cavity on the top face and two axe-shaped cavities on the front face (one small, one large). In total there are moulds for five metal flat axes though not all can be seen in my photo. It was found at Walleybourne Brook, Pontesbury/Church Purverbatch, Shropshire, in 1961. Dated to the Bronze Age, 1900-1700 BC.

Delightful little brown mouse nibbling at a walnut. From a #Roman ‘unswept floor’ mosaic by Heraclitus. Superb use of darker tiles for subtle shadow effects! 2nd century AD. Vatican Museums www.museivaticani.va/content/muse... #MosaicMonday #Archaeology
The image shows detail from a Roman ‘unswept floor’ mosaic depicting a small brown mouse in profile facing left. It has a rounded body, crouching low to the ground, with a front and a back paw showing tucked beneath its body. It has a glossy black eye and two pinkish pointed ears. The mosaicist has used a mix of light and dark brown tiles for the mouse’s body to hint at fur. It has a long, thin, dark tail which stretches out behind. Its pointed nose is almost touching half a walnut in its shell. The walnut is created with warmer light and dark brown tiles. The mouse and walnut are set against a pale-cream tile background, with slightly darker background tiles beneath the mouse and walnut to create subtle shadows.

The Greek mosaicist Heraclitus was inspired by an ancient Greek decorative theme known as ‘unswept floor’ (asàrotos òikos). He created this floor mosaic, seemingly covered with scraps of food from a banquet, for a villa on the Aventine Hill in Rome which dates to the time of Emperor Hadrian. The mosaic is now part of the collections at the Vatican Museums
