WELL NOW, would you look at that? A massive, 4-YEAR-LONG study of NEARLY 30 MILLION people in France found that individuals who received a COVID-19 mRNA vaccine had a 74% LOWER risk of death from severe COVID-19 compared to unvaccinated individuals and ZERO increased risk of all-cause mortality.

The perfect way to put it. They found a way to worm a subscription between you and your normal work.
A screenshot of a post on Threads by Joe Hill. The post reads: "Here’s a thought about the purveyors of AI. They aren’t selling assistance—they’re selling dependency. You give up on acquiring one skill after another, give up on the knotty, meaningful struggle to acquire those skills and AI takes over. It isn’t freeing up time so you can make more of yourself. It’s encouraging cognitive surrender so you can be less."

It doesn't feel like it should be time to bring the pepper plants in for the winter. It's still hitting the low 70s during the day here. And yet, it's going to be getting down to the low 40s and upper 30s consistently next week, so I'll be spending this weekend bringing the plants in.

Aquarium at about six months in. The plant-based filtration system seems to work really well - the water parameters are still looking great. The shrimp and snails are reproducing explosively, and I have to remove handfuls of floating plants every week. Still no fish in the tank yet.
A 29 gallon aquarium with visible driftwood and plants, both rooted to the bottom and floating on the surface. More plants are growing out of compartments in the lid of the plant, and vines are climbing up trellises on the wall behind the tank. A custom LED screen is displaying the time, date, and weather conditions, partially framed by climbing vines.

Time to make more hazmat powder. The last few weeks worth of ghost peppers are going into the dehydrator.

On my walk today I saw the absolutely most tiniest turtle in the canal. Barely an inch long, so small that I thought it was a large beetle when I first spotted it moving. It must have just hatched.
A tiny dark-colored turtle of indeterminate species, in shallow water on a muddy grey surface.

Went to the Aquashella aquarium expo over the weekend. Bought a handful of blue and yellow neocaridina shrimp to add to my existing tank full of red shrimp. They're settling in and grazing on the botanicals happily side by side.

Another Common Watersnake spotted on my walk down to the canal today. There were quite a few fish in the canal as well, so it's probably eating well.
A red-and-brown striped snake, mostly submerged in a shallow stone canal with only its head sticking out of the water.

Hummingbirds.
A four panel comic. In panel 1, a rufous hummingbird flies down toward a large hummingbird feeder with as many as 6 holes on top. He thinks "The humans put up a new feeder!" In panel 2, he lands on the feeder and gazes down at it. He thinks "It's huge. Many of us could feed here at once." In panel 3, we see a close up view of the hummingbird, and he's thinking "This could end the ancient rivalries. Usher in an era of peace. Interesting." In panel 4, an Anna's hummingbird hovers over the feeder and says "Hey, can I have some necta-" and the rufous hummingbird says "No."

Shrimp are still reproducing rapidly in the home office desk aquarium, there are dozens of little baby shrimp of various different sizes in there. The snails are also breeding heavily, which I'm less happy about. I might decide to start culling the snails eventually.

Baby shrimp! I'm pretty sure there were no shrimp this small in the batch that I put in there a few months ago, so this means they're successfully reproducing in the tank. I'm hoping to get a decent self-sustaining population going before I add fish.

That’s the wild thing about AI. There’s never really a sales pitch. It’s just, “It’s here, don’t get left behind.” Every other innovation sells itself — we want them, thus they happen. Here? Not so much. The dangers are high, the value unclear, but rich people want more, so away we go?
