I have the brand of neurodivergence that, when watching Gogglebox, hears every time they loop a bar of music so they can edit reactions between the Strictly clips.

I’m so-so on the Carrie show after a solid start episode - some stuff works, some doesn’t - but I’m genuinely baffled by a mid-season reveal that felt achingly obvious from the second it started. One of those “Yes, we know, we’ve seen TV” things. And not at all typical of Flannigan’s savvy.

Perhaps my favourite “this was the scripted line before they redubbed it” in film history - as evidenced by the #IndianaJones and the Last Crusade tie-in comic book. Two obvious reasons to change the name to Mickey Mouse. No explanation required. But nonetheless an evocative 1940s gag.

It’s soooooooooo good. Just brilliant comedic timing and such wit and invention.

Back in the day I’d just send people this. Which is, ironically, my defining thought on the subject.

Nigella Lawson, three likely autistic contestants and a TARDIS joke. It’s like #BakeOff was trying to lure *specifically* me back. (It worked.)

This is, of course, what the funniest people on video platforms grasped so instinctually. Communal and energetic wins. Silvia’s huge on TikTok, and her “it does the job” FX - like South Park cutouts - become part of her inclusive voice. seetiktok.com/ZGdQXTE2H

Mitchell and Webb’s sketch show on Channel 4 had such a hard time trying to look good on its budget. The FX and grading, the shooting choices. Often not quite good enough. It feels 🤦🏻‍♂️ to realise that aesthetic quality can be the enemy. Can’t nail it? Push away from that. Pick vibes instead.

Spot on. I’ve been struck with how SNL, surely our most expensive comedy show, is often content to look cheap. It’s because it feels quick. It screams “We’re literally doing this live, right now!” It screams *gig*.

All future Halloween movies will require the makers to pick three previous entries from the series out of a hat and make them, and *only* them, canon to the new film.

Pressure is a solid movie, and yet…it kinda only has two beats. So it plays the first repeatedly for an hour. Positions are restated and entrenched rather than developed and explored. Basically, I think I wanted a load more battling between clever people over the minutiae of weather prediction. 🤷🏻‍♂️

The U.S. 4K disc works on UK players. A relief since it’s never gonna get a proper release here.

I love the brief section where Nolan remembers the primes is also blackly funny and goofy. “I’m chasing this guy…no, he’s chasing me.” “Hm, I don’t feel drunk…”

Rewatched it a couple of weeks ago and tonight, for the first time, saw the in-order edit. Just to see what it threw up. Basically: Natalie’s a super complex character, Teddy’s relentlessly after the cash in the car and constantly tries new approaches, and wow is Lenny not at all how he dresses.

Gonna recommend The Three Musketeers: D'Artagnan and Milady. The 2023 French movies are well worth a rent, doing smart, precise things in adaptation to keep things surprising and stakes-y. Also, the fights are fabulous. Done in Spielberg-type oners that keep things honest and immediate.

Furious is extraordinary. Weirdly, of all things, it reminds me of DTF St. Louis - shows that snuck up on you using genre. But both know exactly what they’re about, what they want to say, and never fail to articulate those things, with truth and wit.

Tim Curry in Charlie’s Angels, though. Can’t forget that one. Misleading everyone that he’ll be the big villain.

Watching 9 to 5 on Disney+. Despite opening with the traditionally grotty old Fox logo the HD master they’re using is shockingly good. Someone found a good print and put the work in.

Cinemas seem nervous it’ll do a Master of the Universe. Our showing was booked out…but in the smallest theatre with one of only two screenings. Doesn’t help that they have no US box office to go off. I’m hoping good word of mouth will open it up.

No spoilers, but Coyote vs Acme also has a reveal at one point that’s so funny on a character-in-this-story level that I wanted to burst.

There should be a legal requirement not to label “long term online rental until the platform loses rights” as “Buy”. Call it what it is, “long rental”. At which point companies are incentivised to figure out how to make buy *mean* buy, or else lose sales to cheaper short rental and physical media.

Very struck by just how specifically Spider-Man Brand New Day is focused on loss and recovery. Loss of self, of loved ones, of control. And in particular how connection is vital to any kind of recovery.

It’s an astonishing synthesis of game design, character connection and good story- and dialogue-writing. Everything that might be fixed, in a sequel say, is not in those areas. I’m delighted.

Just played chapter 8 of 007 First Light. Haven’t loved a Bond game this much ever. Not even close. Someone have me on a podcast to rhapsodise. So much good writing. Two back to back scenes equate Bond with heart and hope. Words rarely used for the character but so applicable. It’s a real *take*.

Of all #DoctorWho historical papers this is maybe my new favourite curio - Malcolm Hulke’s 1966 pitch for at a new pilot script for the show. This was mooted for radio, potentially to star Bella Lugosi as the Doctor, or later Peter Cushing. (Taken from David Brunt’s Hartnell Production Diary book.)
