This is the exact phenomenon that creates the sense of “conspicuous missingness” (at least for those sensitive to these things) that I talk about in regards to the video games scene in my video What Is the Games Industry Missing? youtu.be/9JbfFYUVR-U?...

Cregger’s Resident Evil movie is good, not great. His worst film, and I think people wouldn’t have glazed it half as much if his name wasn’t attached to it. That ending - woof. After a great 75 minutes of practical effects, the last 15 devolves into very ugly CGI that did not work for me.

Dude what the fuck was that ending. 5/10. Pros: Jean and Wolverine. Baker’s Essex. The animations are gorgeous.

If you think Wolverine’s Smell-O-Vision looked forgivable in the reviews, just wait until you get to Japan. Half this section is following smells.

Hello hello, decided I'm just going to start writing my essays on my own thing, instead of bottling them. Here's my first on Dawnwalker's use of time as narrative tool

Why The Blood of Dawnwalker's time mechanic is better than you realise

Far from being a hindrance, making time a finite resource shapes stories and undermines the idea of open-world bloat

Rolled credits on Blood of Dawnwalker. Fantastic. Loved it. It’s also greater than the sum of its parts. Lots for the team to iterate in a sequel (adding stealth, cosmetics, weapon and enemy variety) but they’re exciting opportunities for a cool series, not big issues here.

Rolled credits on Star Wars: Zero Company! Another banger in a year of them. I was thinking about it when I wasn’t playing it. Writing is very strong. I think some reviews oversold the spectacle and the performance was ROUGH in places but I loved the gameplay. Scratched a strategy itch!

Kinda wish the GTA Presentation had a voiceover explaining gameplay features in the world rather than a cinematic montage of contextless story beats and open world activities. For example, I heard your diet and fitness will change how you look - is that true? It sure looks like GTA though!

Rolled credits on Mortal Shell 2! Loved it. Fantastic game. Great combat, great monsters, great bosses. However! It’s at its absolute best when it’s not trying to be Elden Ring. The level design can be really hit or miss, and I was crying out for new enemy types in the second half. 8/10.

If the world is just, Denshattack will be in GOTY conversations in December. A game that absolutely nails what it’s going for in every single way. A 10/10 video game that had me grinning from ear to ear every minute I was playing it.

Finally watched Supergirl. The first hour is quite good (not great) and then dips big time. Some great little beats (flying to space to scream. Love it.) It also relies far too much on quite bad needle drops and it’s quite an ugly film. Flashbacks are good though! Milly Alcock is superb throughout.

The horror of Wolfenstein: The New Colossus is in how much monstrous machinery was already in the US, waiting for someone to plug in. In places the game feels underdeveloped. But one thing stays the same. We're in the Nazi-killing business. And business is good. youtu.be/eIIglIWwwj0?...
