How Scrubbers Work
How Scrubbers Work

• Air vs. Water Pollution: Systems swap air emissions for ocean contamination, allowing ships to burn cheap, high-sulfur fuel while complying with International Maritime Organization (IMO) standards.

• Open-Loop Systems: Pull in large volumes of seawater, spray it through exhaust stacks, and dump the resulting toxic mix overboard.

• Closed-Loop Systems: Recycle washwater onboard and store the remaining sludge for disposal on land.

Environmental Impacts

• Toxic Cocktail: Discharge contains sulfuric acid, heavy metals, soot, oil, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).

• Marine Life Damage: Even extreme dilutions harm zooplankton, stunt crustacean development, and cause severe larval deformations in sea urchins and mussels.

• Volume: Individual ships can discharge up to 1,200 cubic meters of washwater per hour, totaling billions of tonnes globally each year.
