My mom used to keep this on her desk. She was the most civic-minded person I ever knew. One of the last letters she dictated to me before she died was a detailed note to a local official about a parking lot change she thought would disrupt neighborhood traffic in a dangerous way.

Not to long ago I traveled to the Asheville region of North Carolina, and nearly two months since the hurricane Helene went right through, you can still visibly see the damages: There were flash floods, fires, strong winds, and even tornados. Below are photos I took while hiking in the woods:

Stricken, fallen, and split trees litter this small depression. Presumably from a tornado.

Massive trees several feet thick knocked over. This is a very common appearance.
