Justin Million: An impeccable poet, and editor of poetry at bird, buried press. Having grown up a zinester, I'm not sure whether I would've ever started actually submitting my work to publishers without the encouragement of Justin Million... He is often my first reader, and always my best person.

Ursula Pflug: @pflugu.bsky.social's book "Green Music" was a huge inspiration to me when I was a teenager. The magical realism was fascinating and gorgeous. - I think I probably stole a lot from it in "brainsick" the book I self-published when I was a 17-year-old high school dropout.

Ernest Hemingway: Found Hemingway in university and loved the simplicity of his language. I also won the inaugural Barbara Rooke Travel Prize at Trent University by writing about "The Sun Also Rises" and that paid my way to Spain, which is a trip I'm very grateful to have had.

Elisha @elishamay.bsky.social · 23/03/2025
Charles Bukowski: His writing opened me up to what poetry could be, and for that I am grateful. As a kid who had grown up around a lot of normalized misogyny, I wasn't put off by his treatment of women, and while I'm happy to have unlearned THAT garbage, I'm still glad that his work informed mine.

Elisha @elishamay.bsky.social · 23/03/2025
JD Salinger: I haven't done a reread of Salinger in recent memory, but I think maybe I just felt incredibly seen by his work when I was first reading it as a young person. Having the books handy remains a comfort.

Kurt Vonnegut: Slaughterhouse Five is my all time favourite book, and one could probably argue that the way I approach writing a collection of poetry is Tralfamadorian-inspired.

I have been boycotting Amazon... forever? And all of Nestle's holdings for the past... idk 7/8 years maybe? I don't expect everyone to drop everything, but there are obvious evils in the world and I do my absolute best to avoid supporting them with my dollars. Single day symbolism is not enough.

I have high hopes for young people everywhere stepping up for the working class and embracing difference. A turban certainly WAS a barrier in the past, but millenials/gen z are the largest voting block now - if we vote. If he can engage us sufficiently, I think he has a chance anywhere, even Quebec.

I couldn't stop thinking about this photograph, so I spent my afternoon and evening sitting with it. #StandWithUkraine
Acrylic painting of Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Donald Trump on a circular wood block, based on a photograph taken by Doug Mills while Trump yelled at Zelenskyy in the Oval Office.

Zelenskyy looks into the camera almost like Jim from The Office, but full of what I assume is a mix of rage and disbelief (and which I admit isn't properly captured in his expression in the painting.)Same painting, but viewed from an angle to show the sides of the wood block painted the blue and yellow of the Ukrainian flag.

So its economic blackout day... but if you can afford to, can you please just ALWAYS shop local and avoid voting for billionaires with your dollars? No shade on people struggling to survive going for the lowest possible prices. I get it. But if you are thriving, please do not support the ultra-rich.

Three versions of postcards from the Put Food Banks Out of Business campaign, all in support of a basic income guarantee:

I support basic income because...

"8.7 million people in Canada are food insecure."

"1 in 4 children in Canada are food insecure."

"Poverty costs up to $84 billion a year (roughly the cost of a basic income)."

While I don't approve of "land barons" in the real world, I am pretty pumped to have built all three possible homesteads in #Skyrim. I have been so hyperfocused on completing this that I still haven't even chosen a side in the civil war yet. 😂 #SkyrimAchievements

Master Architect [Build three houses. 3% of players have this achievement.]

Land Baron [Buy three plots of land. 4.7% of players have this achievement.]

Strategic voters in #ptbo, we now have an even vote split between left and right. Please just vote for whichever candidate/party you REALLY believe in!
Peterborough—Kawartha Candidates:

Jen Deck – Ontario NDP/NPD
Lucas Graham – Green Party of Ontario
Adam Hopkins – Ontario Liberal Party
Brian Martindale – Ontario Party
Andrew Roudny – New Blue Party
Dave Smith – PC Party of Ontario (incumbent)

The Liberal Party in Ontario does not even have official party status right now, and they've got zero profile. - How is voting for them in *most* ridings strategic? Can we please all just vote for the party we actually align with? Trying the same failed approach over and over is not strategic.
020
Elisha @elishamay.bsky.social · 14/02/2025
So called "strategic voting" strikes me as deeply unstrategic and even undemocratic. Past liberal votes/whatever else these projections are based on do not account for the fact that many of those past votes were also "strategic". We get no real sense of how people WANTED to vote but were afraid to.

Can you say more about the G20 commitment? - When I search for it I find a lot about advocacy around G20 and not much clarity on actual commitments made. And what I did find doesn't seem very concrete. Would love to learn more about the details.

We need fairer taxation. #TaxTheRich [Stats borrowed from @oxfaminternational.bsky.social Source: www.oxfam.org/en/research/... ]
"For every dollar of tax revenue globally, on average just 4 cents are made up of revenue from wealth taxes."

From Oxfam's 2019 report "Public Good or Private Wealth?"While the richest continue to enjoy booming fortunes, they are also enjoying some of the lowest levels of tax in decades – as are the corporations that they own:

• Wealth is particularly undertaxed. Only 4 cents in every dollar of tax revenue comes from taxes on wealth.

• In rich countries, the average top rate of personal income tax fell from 62% in 1970 to 38% in 2013. In developing countries, the average top rate of personal income tax is 28%.

• In some countries like Brazil and the UK, the poorest 10% are now paying a higher proportion of their incomes in tax than the richest 10%. ‘Financing the education of the poorest children is saving lives and it is constructing the future of the world.’ – Illiassou Boubagar, ROTAB Alliance for Budget Transparency, Niger

• Governments should focus their efforts on raising more from the very wealthy to help fight inequality. For example, getting the richest to pay just 0.5% extra tax on their wealth could raise more money than it would cost to educate all 262 million children out of school and provide healthcare that would save the lives of 3.3 million people.

• The super-rich are hiding $7.6 trillion from the tax authorities. Corporates also hide large amounts offshore. Together this deprives developing countries of $170bn a year.

[Graphic also includes pie chart of breakdown of tax revenue, and an image reiterating the fact above about $7.6 trillion being hidden from tax authorities.]
