I couldn't stop thinking about this photograph, so I spent my afternoon and evening sitting with it. #StandWithUkraine
Acrylic painting of Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Donald Trump on a circular wood block, based on a photograph taken by Doug Mills while Trump yelled at Zelenskyy in the Oval Office.

Zelenskyy looks into the camera almost like Jim from The Office, but full of what I assume is a mix of rage and disbelief (and which I admit isn't properly captured in his expression in the painting.)Same painting, but viewed from an angle to show the sides of the wood block painted the blue and yellow of the Ukrainian flag.

So its economic blackout day... but if you can afford to, can you please just ALWAYS shop local and avoid voting for billionaires with your dollars? No shade on people struggling to survive going for the lowest possible prices. I get it. But if you are thriving, please do not support the ultra-rich.

We need fairer taxation. #TaxTheRich [Stats borrowed from @oxfaminternational.bsky.social Source: www.oxfam.org/en/research/... ]
"For every dollar of tax revenue globally, on average just 4 cents are made up of revenue from wealth taxes."

From Oxfam's 2019 report "Public Good or Private Wealth?"While the richest continue to enjoy booming fortunes, they are also enjoying some of the lowest levels of tax in decades – as are the corporations that they own:

• Wealth is particularly undertaxed. Only 4 cents in every dollar of tax revenue comes from taxes on wealth.

• In rich countries, the average top rate of personal income tax fell from 62% in 1970 to 38% in 2013. In developing countries, the average top rate of personal income tax is 28%.

• In some countries like Brazil and the UK, the poorest 10% are now paying a higher proportion of their incomes in tax than the richest 10%. ‘Financing the education of the poorest children is saving lives and it is constructing the future of the world.’ – Illiassou Boubagar, ROTAB Alliance for Budget Transparency, Niger

• Governments should focus their efforts on raising more from the very wealthy to help fight inequality. For example, getting the richest to pay just 0.5% extra tax on their wealth could raise more money than it would cost to educate all 262 million children out of school and provide healthcare that would save the lives of 3.3 million people.

• The super-rich are hiding $7.6 trillion from the tax authorities. Corporates also hide large amounts offshore. Together this deprives developing countries of $170bn a year.

[Graphic also includes pie chart of breakdown of tax revenue, and an image reiterating the fact above about $7.6 trillion being hidden from tax authorities.]

Thinking more about forests this morning and found myself looking at various maps, including the tree cover map pictured below. I was struck by my immediate recognition of the line of the Bruce Trail crossing from Hamilton, through Grimsby, all the way to St. Catharines. "A ribbon of wilderness."
On top, the Bruce Trail App map, and below, a tree cover map, both centred on Grimsby, with Hamilton on the far left, and St. Catharines on the right.

The tree cover map has a largely unbroken green line of trees following the Niagara Escarpment.

Because the Bruce Trail traces along the Niagara Escarpment, the lines on these two maps are almost identical - a clear illustration of the "ribbon of wilderness" the Bruce Trail Conservancy aims to preserve.

I really appreciate the arts coverage, but what this [pay-walled] article misses is that artists need *multiple sources of funding* to apply in some grant streams. Having funding available at the municipal level can open doors to other opportunities that we may not be able to access otherwise.
Screenshot of the Ontario Arts Council webpage for Multi and Inter-Arts Projects:

"Your application will include:

-basic information about the project

-your answers to application questions
a project budget

--The OAC will not fund 100 per cent of a project except in the Creation category.

--Applications to the other categories must include a range of revenue sources such as other arts grants, box-office sales, registrant fees and so on.
