ChatGPT is adding the signatures of real New Yorker cartoonists to its AI-generated images. So far, I've found the signatures of more than 15 contributors. "It’s slop, and unlike the other slop that I’ve encountered, this is slop that’s pretending to be me." www.niemanlab.org/2026/10/chat...
Left: A cartoon generated by ChatGPT and signed with Emily Flake’s signature that was posted to a Reddit forum in June. Right: A real Emily Flake cartoon published in The New Yorker on August 20, 2026 and licensed via The Cartoon Bank.

I'm incredibly pleased to be in Necessary Fiction again. (This story emerged from research I was doing on 1899 New Orleans for a different, longer project.)

Duty bound to mention that pre-orders are still on sale with free shipping, so it's a great deal whether or not a paltry class action settlement is spontaneously combusting in your pocket!

Making a difficult couple of weeks magnitudes brighter, I've received a pair of lovely blurbs for my forthcoming novel. I'm so incredibly grateful for the generosity of writers I've met only on the page. 1/3

Dealing with a new elder-care situation, and I'm grateful to everyone who has allowed me to take something off my plate--and especially to my husband for going above and beyond while our little bungalow is occupied by a third human, a third rescue dog, and a door-blocking wheelchair.

I'm from Louisiana and didn't know about this until I started researching late nineteenth-century New Orleans history for a novel I'm writing. (Grateful to all the city's historians, archivists, and journalists. A proper tribute to come at some point!)

Day before first class of the fall. I have a firm AI policy (none), but so does the college at which I teach (literally: “more!”) I don’t think anyone outside education fully appreciates how quickly this has overwhelmed… everything. I’m excited to teach again, but I also already feel… very sad.

I did the dialect quiz and was pretty annoyed that my last answer was "poor boy." What was even the point of everything between that and "y'all?" (Also: I don't say "poor boy," but rather "poboy," but that was the closest answer.)

Anthropic settlement question for the writers and publishers of Bluesky: If book publication rights reverted to an author in 2007, does the publisher still have a right to claim the default 50/50 split or should the author contest?

For as long as my pro-AI university allows me to ban generative AI, I'll continue to do so. But because so many classes allow or even encourage it, even in the Humanities (ugh), I feel like I have to lay out more of my reasoning every semester. Basic argument: LET'S MAKE HUMAN THINGS, WHILE WE CAN.
Generative AI Policy:

Other classes at ASU may allow or even encourage the use of generative AI, but in this course, you will not use it for either your fiction or your reading responses
Together, we’re reading and writing work made by humans, for humans, in search of a human reaction. It is not appropriate to ask me or your classmates to read fiction or other prose written primarily or in part by machines
(I will also not use AI in my class prep or in any of the materials I make for you: this course is an expression of my ideas, art practices, and imagination, designed for you by me, based on years of study and experience)
Especially at the start of your artistic and academic careers, I believe that even light reliance on tools such as AI will inhibit the development of the skills, mindsets, and abilities necessary for your success
TLDR: I want your fiction, and your reactions to the books we read. That’s the path to an A in this class (and, more importantly, to learning all that this class has to offer)

Going through the last of my dad’s belongings: boxes of poetry rejections from the 1970s-1990s. Most are form letters with handwritten notes from some of the 20th-century’s most esteemed poetry editors. Some are kind. Many are spiteful. All are making me (sort of) miss paper submissions and SASEs.

My heart is heavy that we are making a collective miscalculation in undervaluing the humanities - from my FT piece www.ft.com/content/fbde...
Thinking is hard. Reflection is hard. Perhaps we will persist with our collective miscalculation and ignore all that philosophy, literature, classics and history have to offer us. The humanities have a word for this: tragedy.

The most overused word in contemporary fashionspeak is *moment.* Not only as in "Chanel is having a summer moment" or "that was a viral runway moment," but also your pants or shoes as "a style moment" in your outfit. The outfit is also a moment, of course. (Yes, I'm researching fiction.)
