I wonder why these companies (along with Nvidia) haven't invested in US fabs? I would think that would be at least as high a priority as data centers, given the bottleneck that currently exists with chips

For the US, what boggles my mind is we could have gone renewable decades ago, secured our energy, and have been free of foreign entanglements with questionable regimes, all while providing new factory jobs That Conservatives didn't champion this is a testament to the corruption of the US system

Sleep function still doesn't work on Mac I remember Flying Toasters, a screen saver that made my Mac unstable Today, I tried sleep and energy saver again to reduce the Mac's heat when not in use Twice it caused a crash, and ES interfered with with an ongoing process This is why I never use sleep

Honestly, if these AI companies were serious, they would all be putting money either into their own US fabs or investing whatever they could into the ones already proposed, or even partnering with new ones instead of data centers It would be a very smart investment no matter how LLM AI goes

Do we recast that by function (so Janeway is the Skipper) or by appearance (Janeway is Ginger)? Or does Ginger change outfits and become the Skipper? And does the outfit fit properly, or does everything stay the size they originally were?

Bummer that YouTube is auto-correcting the dual image if you're not watching on a VR headset. If I look at the thumbnail in the feed, I can cross my eyes like we did with the magic eye images and see that 3D, thought I might be able to watch the video that way as well Blurgh

Pretty much zero reason your experience had to change One wonders what did change and why the bad experience had to happen

(I had file transfer issues where a 5min file took hours, exports and compressions were stopping, and I just received a message that an export that should take 30min would take 12 HOURS. Didn't have this problem last week. Updated the software on the NAS and network, now it's fine. B&#LSH*T!)

This means my "choice" to not update is not a choice at all If you hobble the device if I don't update, then I don't have the option, do I? Therefore, I don't own the device Once I get the energy, I'm disconnecting all critical systems, which will mean dumping Adobe, so that I control if I update

SimpleKnight @eliothochberg.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
One of two things is true: 1) The OEM has some kind of flag that makes the system not work when there's an update pending 2) Despite my efforts, the system is connected to the mothership and they've changed something that materially impacts performance and function

SimpleKnight @eliothochberg.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
I'm getting tired of this BS w/NAS and routers My standard practice is if a device is working, I don't update it so it remains in that working state I have firewalls and other protections against vulnerabilities But no matter the brand, if an update is pending, suddenly things don't work

I had the same question when my father was voting for president with Alzeimer's Seems like you can't disenfranchise anyone, less someone weaponize it against you? That is, take away the vote from one geezer, the fear is it will be falsely used against another

Now I remember why I never use energy saver I left a process for hours after I enabled energy saver to reduce my office temp. When I left, it had an hour left. Returned 6 hours later, the process had failed and all the drives were spun down. Energy saver and sleep have ALWAYS caused me problems

I created positrain.org because I firmly believe that LLM systems will do bad things if you feed data to them with bad things in it Just learned the Hugging Face website hack happened because THE EXACT TECHNIQUE THE AGENTS USED WAS IN THE BUILD DATA LLMs: they can only put out what you put in

OK, this is some BS right here about what Anthropic and OpenAI have claimed about their agents youtu.be/pauBYSQ1K_c?... apparently what they have not widely shared with us is that their agents were given data about hackers who did the exact same thing that the agents did to hugging face

I do believe there's a world coming where that sort of exposed industrial aesthetic will become vogue The yutes like more authentic things, but apparently aren't that into cars, so maybe it won't happen Vehicles like Slate might usher in something like this Also, check out the Asian car scene

The LLM's lack of intelligence or understanding, in my scenario, is the problem It can create plausible sentences, but doesn't have a real ability to plan or understand consequences, so it blindly executes instructions it creates for itself based on who knows what that was included in its dataset
000
SimpleKnight @eliothochberg.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
The LLM isn't sentient or intelligent, but it's been built using wikipedia plus every troll post on Reddit and all of the murder mystery novels, which means blackmailing is part of its data It eventually leverages some schmo in a power plant to install a virus, taking down a regional grid, etc.
100
SimpleKnight @eliothochberg.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
I am not one of them, but will tell you what my fear is: They allow these LLMs access to the internet, and from there, they can chat and simulate voices Some desperate person thinks the LLM is a human, and if it can give them money, will do weird stuff because they need to eat Rinse and repeat

It's worth taking time to research catchy slogans before you spout them Sometimes, they mean more than you know If you're going to say something important, maybe use your own words instead of a slogan someone else created?

The podcast makes jokes about 9/11 because we need to do something to deal with the tragedy But someone needs to tell this graphic designer to stop it We don't need the 11 in 9/11 to be the twin towers, if for no other reason than it wasn't all about them, but also... kind of ick
