The Ford Government is a perfect case study in the failings of one-party governments. The greenbelt scandal also comes to mind. A one-party government will always try to get away with whatever it can against the will of the voters, and it leads to inconsistent policy and lots of wasted time.

Let’s call this what it is: punishing downtown ridings with bike lanes because they don’t vote PC, trying to win over suburban swing voters instead. With proportional representation, every vote counts. Even downtown votes matter. It’s time to demand change. #onpoli
A side-by-side pie chart graphic titled "Ontario votes 2025." The left pie chart shows the popular vote: 43% PC, 29.9% Liberal, 18.6% NDP, 4.8% Green, and 3.8% Other. The right pie chart shows seat distribution: 64.5% PC, 21.8% NDP, 11.3% Liberal, 1.6% Green, and 0.8% Other. The comparison highlights the discrepancy between votes cast and seats won.

Time and time again, Canadians have made themselves clear. Between public consultation at the 2016 ERRE committee, and poll-after-poll, Canadians want proportional representation. It's time for our elected officials to take some accountability and follow through with electoral reform.

Imagine being able to rank candidates and having multiple MPs elected for your region. That's STV, one form of proportional representation where party standings reflect voter preferences.

Does your local MP really matter? Ask the voters Under First-Past-the-Post democracy, we put a lot of stake in our local representative. However, Canadian voters tend to focus more on the party that they support than the candidates themselves. open.substack.com/pub/electora...

Opinion: Canada’s democracy had a decent day. But it can do better to reflect all Canadians in this moment of crisis
In a democracy – and especially in a crisis – citizens need to feel represented. With our election delivering a deeply divided result, let’s ask: should we elect for proportional representation?

The last time that anyone but a Conservative, Reform or PC MP was elected in rural Alberta was *1968*. In 2025, nearly 20% of Albertans outside of Calgary and Edmonton voted Liberal. "Safe seats" created by First-Past-the-Post deny Canadians their right to fair representation.

One of the election night narratives was that expected Liberal gains in Alberta did not materialize. While the Liberals stayed at 2 MPs, their vote share massively increased. In 2021, Liberals received 300k votes in Alberta (15%). This time, they got 630k (28%). They doubled it.
Federal popular vote in Alberta in 2025 was: 63.5% for the Conservatives, 27.9% for the Liberals, and 6.3% for the NDP.

Federal popular vote in Alberta in 2021 was: 55.3% for the Conservatives, 15.5% for the Liberals, and 19.1% for the NDP.

Only just started going through the numbers in this election, but to me it seems like "strategic voting" was purely beneficial towards the Liberals. No matter who the pre-election "favourite" in a riding was, there were big swings to the Liberals. In some cases, this handed wins to Conservatives.

Mark Carney said today that, while electoral reform is not a priority, he believes the Prime Minister should be neutral as avenues for reform are explored. We agree, which is why we believe that the Liberal Party should endorse a National Citizen's Assembly on Electoral Reform.

Nobody needs to defend Trudeau's handling of electoral reform- he's not running for office. The report was unambiguous: - The government should design a proportional election system. - The overwhelming share of pro-reform testimony favoured proportional representation.
Recommendation 1

The Committee recommends that the Government should, as it develops a new electoral system, use the Gallagher index in order to minimize the level of distortion between the popular will of the electorate and the resultant seat allocations in Parliament. The government should seek to design a system that achieves a Gallagher score of 5 or less.Recommendation 12

Observation: The Committee acknowledges that, of those who wanted change, the overwhelming majority of testimony was in favour of proportional representation. The Committee recognizes the utility of the Gallagher Index, a tool that has been developed to measure an electoral system’s relative disproportionality between votes received and seats allotted in a legislature, as a means of assessing the proportionality of different electoral system options.

The Committee recommends that:

- The Government hold a referendum, in which the current system is on the ballot;
- That the referendum propose a proportional electoral system that achieves a Gallagher Index score of 5 or less; and
- That the Government complete the design of the alternate electoral system that is proposed on the referendum ballot prior to the start of the referendum campaign period.

Both the NDP and Greens are committed to making every vote count in Ontario with proportional representation! The others? Not so much. Remember, the best strategic vote is to elect those who will fix the system—so you’ll never have to worry about wasted votes or false majorities again!
A beige and orange graphic with the title "ELECTORAL REFORM." The text states that the party will reform Ontario’s voting system to be fair and inclusive by replacing first-past-the-post with a mixed-member proportional system where every vote counts. It mentions consulting the public, civil society, and other parties to design a "made-in-Ontario" system that reflects community needs.A white and green document titled "Democratic reform and voter rights." The text criticizes Doug Ford’s government for doubling donation limits and discusses the need for a Citizens’ Assembly on electoral reform. It lists commitments including binding recommendations on electoral reform, ranked ballots for municipalities, lower donation limits, restoring Auditor General oversight, a five-year cooling-off period for lobbyists, removing strong mayor powers, increasing mobile polling locations, and enforcing accessibility standards at voting stations.
