CT House candidate William Gifford asks if it's antisemitic to "not like someone because they are Jewish" given "what the Jewish religion says against white Christian men." This is hiding a dangerous canard behind "just asking questions." CT GOP and Rep. Tim Ackert, who endorsed him, must condemn.

Yeah I believe so. And there are some activists saying we should understand the context he's in, that he has to win there etc. I think that could all be true, and it's still just a reality that with trans folks, there is this ease and perceived necessity to abandon.

THREAD 🧵 This week, Elon Musk's America PAC launched hundreds of anti-trans ads, part of a $100 million midterm spend. In 2024, a Musk-funded PAC ran antisemitic ads reminding Muslim voters that Doug Emhoff is Jewish. That's not a coincidence.
Screenshot of an article headline reading, “Elon Musk Targets Democrats on Transgender Issues in Key Senate Races.” The subheadline says a political group associated with Musk is running attack ads against Democrats in Texas, Ohio, and Iowa.Screenshot of an article headline reading, “Antisemitic Ads About Doug Emhoff Target Muslim Voters in Michigan.” The subheadline says a Republican-linked group appears to be running ads reminding Muslim voters of Kamala Harris’s pro-Israel views and her husband’s Jewish faith.

This was an issue from very early on in public and in full view, with hostage families protesting at great risk to themselves to bring attention to. What this article shows in this context is just that it happened much earlier as well.

I cannot describe the brokenness I felt reading this from the Haaretz piece. The hostages were betrayed by everyone; Israeli leaders, the diaspora leaders & their orgs, the entire pro-Israel industrial complex, and by far and away the millions of people who cried "hostages" to support a genocide.
"He told me that in the first stage, they had no problem releasing all civilians without anything in return," Mashharawi recounts. "I swear, those were his exact words: all civilians, without anything in return. They had only one condition: They wanted us to bring in an agreed-upon mediator as quickly as possible, so that negotiations could immediately begin over everything else – the release of soldiers and officers in exchange for Palestinian prisoners, and then the issue of the blockade on Gaza."

Those sorts of people become popular on social media because of the dynamic. Of course, they exist either way.

Elad Nehorai @eladn.bsky.social · 07/09/2026
One of social media's worst dynamics is the way it incentivizes people to take on the most extreme position. There is always someone who can claim to be more pure. The result is that people can constantly shame others by "proving" their bonafides through piling on those seen as too moderate.

These people are ridiculous. The Hebrew they are referring to is a quote from the Torah, "צֶ֥דֶק צֶ֖דֶק תִּרְדֹּ֑ף" ("Justice, justice, shall you pursue"). Some people want actual justice, others just want Jews to erase every part of our peoplehood, including our Torah. In the name of progressivism. So gross.

This reminds me of this section from Philip Slater’s “The Pursuit of Loneliness” The passage is about individualism but imo the same logic applies to our relationship to technology. We have created our issues through over-reliance on tech, and we then think the answer is more tech.
erated not have to fight them
so Vigo pecularly exaggerated hostility that hippies tend to arouse suggests that the life they strive for is highly seduc-
tive to middle-aged Americans.
The intensity of this reaction can in part be attributed to a kind of circularity that characterizes American individualism. When a value is as strongly held as is individualism in America the illnesses it produces tend to be treated by increasing the dosage, in the same way an alcoholic treats a hangover or a drug addict his withdrawal symptoms. Technological change, mobility, and the individualistic ethos combine to rupture the bonds that tie each individual to a family, a community, a kinship network, a geographical location-bonds that give him a comfortable sense of himself. As this sense of himself erodes, he seeks ways of affirming it. But his efforts at self-enhancement automatically accelerate the very erosion he seeks to halt.
It is easy to produce examples of the many ways in which Americans attempt to minimize, circumvent, or deny the interdependence upon which all human societies are based. We seek a private house, a private means of transportation, a private garden, a private laundry, self-service stores, and do-it-yourself skills of every kind. An enormous technology seems to have set itself the task of making it unnecessary for one human being ever to ask anything of another in the course of going about his daily business. Even within the family Americans are unique in their feeling that each member should have a separate room, and even a separate tele-phone, television, and car, when economically possible. We seek more and more privacy, and feel more and more alienated and lonely when we get it. What accidental contacts we do have, furthermore, seem more intrusive, not only because they are unsought but because they are unconnected with any familiar pattern of interdependence.

One day students will look at the reaction to DSA as part of America’s long history of using terror of imagined communism to entrench right wing politics. And they’ll also be able to compare it to the way multiple nations fell to fascism. We’re just one more, & today is no different than the past.

The dismissal of "woke 1" should be called what it really is, the abandonment of Black people. Fine, of course, to talk about the excesses of the punitive left etc. I and many others have been subject to it. But throwing that era away so casually, esp things like "defund" etc, is just retreat.

my own kinda confessional essay in 2020 about growing up in evangelicalism and conspiracy theories touched on similar ideas of the thrilling nature of alternate worldviews wisetendersnob.medium.com/this-secret-...
Running through all of these schools and churches was an open encouragement of suspicion: in elites, in government, and official explanations. On the other side of a faith in an unseen and all-powerful Father stood a fear in the invisible and all-ranging foe. While I can now see the evangelical community’s fears about the United Nations to be parochial and embarrassing, I can remember the vividness and excitement that suffused evangelical life, how it brought a visceral meaning to every day’s events. Today, QAnon is running rampant through evangelical circles, both in the US and abroad. It’s not really that surprising, Q is playing all the hits of my youth: citing Bible verses to exhort adherents to stand firm against dark elites, one of oldest songs in modern evangelical canon. We were raised with visions of resolute martyrs and courageous believers like Elisabeth Eliot or Corrie Ten Boom. In comparison to non-believers, an evangelical can live the thrilling life of an undercover agent, a member of the divine resistance, like The Americans but for Christ.

Far from providing a new view of the world, Q sounds like so many Sunday School and Christian schoolteachers I’ve had: “the greater world is full of all kinds of unseen evil and carnal villainy, let us pray for the coming salvation, and don’t trust the media.” Throw in some crankiness about the Democratic Party, and I cannot be the only ex-evangelical who is embarrassed to see so many people being persuaded by the musty fears we were raised on.

We must make peace with the fact that the real motivations behind human choices are deeply emotional and subjective. The pandemic and climate crisis taught us facts, no matter how hard and compelling, are only accepted by minds that are open to it. We must cultivate that openness.
It may not seem like much, but the problem is often that we measure all our movements by what they do for the outside world as opposed to what they also offer to their members. This is part of what makes them unsustainable.

Our movements, our world, and whatever new progressive world we hope to inhabit, will require us to have an inner sense of meaning. Rituals. Communities to live them out. We cannot erase all these things simply because many of us have moved on from the broken versions of them.

Yes, we must overthrow the fascists. Yes, we must have massively radical change. Yes, we need to aggressively force our governments to fight climate change.

But it is the fabric of meaning and myth making that allows us to even imagine what that could look like.

For years now, Dems and others who once cared about BLM and Black causes in general have quietly abandoned the cause. It was a defiance that was coded and hidden, in attempts to return to the status quo without being too obvious. Now it's just full throated, unabashed abandonment. Explicit.
