What is Hosha'na Rabba? A thread of indeterminate length. Before we begin, a forewarning: I would like to avoid being the XKCD expert familiarity guy, so if there is anything I bring up which you do not understand and would like to, feel free to ask. It's a weird day with a lot going on
"Hoshana Rabba is second nature to us liturgists, so it's easy to forget that the average person probably only knows Kol Mevasser and the Yamim Noraim additions."
"And cabbage, of course."
"Of course."

Even when they're trying to compensate for it, experts in anything wildly overestimate the average person's familiarity with their field.

nyc, it’s almost time. 🗳️ early voting starts 10/24. we’ve already planned to hit the polls on 10/25. time to move forward, demand accountability, and make it clear we’re ready for a shift in policy. show up. cast your vote. make it count. 🗽

there aren’t enough words to express how despicable this framing from the world bank is. calling informality a “choice” ignores poverty, weak labor markets, low wages, and lack of protections. flexibility is not freedom when it’s the only option.

World bank: Informality is not a single story. In Latin America, many workers choose self-employment: they value the flexibility and freedom of being their own boss over a formal salary.

apropos of this latest round I will just mention that there has been antisemitism on the left since the beginning. the people who invented anticapitalism did so in an environment in which Judaism had been equated with bad economic practices for 600 years already. AND they didn’t know any Jews

the Cornell scandal is actually so bleak. “college culture” apparently means watching something horrific happen and then immediately reaching for every excuse in the book to avoid saying the obvious: some things are just evil. idc how connected you are, what frat you’re in, what your politics are,

this is ridiculous. gentrification isn’t caused by one vendor charging a foreigner more. economically, it’s driven by demand, supply constraints, rising land values, investment & pp. price discrimination may transfer surplus but it doesn’t automatically raise market-wide prices or cause displacement
alt text: a social media post arguing that overcharging wealthy foreigners in mexico contributes to gentrification by normalizing higher prices that eventually affect local residents.

The Nexus Project @nexusproject.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
This plan shows that Mayor Mamdani has listened to the concerns of Jewish New Yorkers — and put forward meaningful commitments and real funding to help keep them safe. Our full statement on NYC's first-ever municipal strategy to combat antisemitism:
A M N Y headlien: "Mamdani unveils long-awaited antisemitism strategy with $7.4M for prevention, security." "The Nexus Project appreciates and encourages the implementation of Mayor Zohran Mamdani's Strategy to Combat Antisemitism. We are pleased to see the Nexus Document included among the tools that the New York City government will utilize to identify and confront antisemitism."Quote from Jonathan Jacoby, President, The Nexus Project: "“This plan shows that Mayor Mamdani has listened to the concerns of Jewish New Yorkers — and put forward meaningful commitments and real funding to help keep them safe. Mayor Mamdani’s strategy is rooted in an important recognition that confronting antisemitism is a critical part of the wider struggle against bigotry. Jews have always thrived in pluralistic democracies. When we defend one another and build a society where no group can be singled out for discrimination, we're all safer and more secure.”Quote from Jonathan Jacoby, President, The Nexus Project: “We're proud and encouraged to see the Nexus Document is helping guide how New York City understands and responds to antisemitism.

Building this strategy on a strong, pluralistic framework will help stem the rise in antisemitism while protecting the free expression and civil liberties that keep all of us safe.”Quote from Jonathan Jacoby, President, The Nexus Project: “We are particularly encouraged to see the strategy double funding for the Partners Against the Hate (PATH) program as well as significant investment in new resources to secure synagogues, nonprofits and other vulnerable institutions as well as expanding Holocaust and Jewish history and culture education.

This is a very important first step. The strategy’s success now depends on implementation and turning a plan into real action with real impact. We call on everyone across the ideological spectrum to help make it succeed — by offering feedback, working with city and communal partners, and encouraging the mayor's office to deliver on this promise.”

the point about the growing importance of latino voters is valid, but “nadie puede llegar…” is too absolute. 65m latinos ≠ 65m voters, and the latino electorate isn’t a single bloc. their influence is significant in some races, but “indispensable” overstates the case.
