Labor has always been on the frontlines in the fight against fascism – and today is no different. Unions are fighting Trump’s cruel agenda in the courts and in the streets, and workers across industries are standing up for each other. There’s courage – and hope – in solidarity.

“What can I do? I can try to help us build a scientific enterprise that won’t be as easy to attack. To do that, we need to do a better job recognizing that the public is investing in this and we owe them a debt of gratitude, rather than simply lecturing to them about all the great things we found”

Here we see why Dem politicians will keep saying the most unhelpful things during a time of national crisis. I hope they have the wit to ask themselves: (1) Is my approval rating the most important thing right now? (2) What is the empirical evidence that "message testing" actually works?

Fascism For First Time Founders
Over the last year or so I've seen a disturbing tendency in tech/startup/VC worlds to buy into the neoreactionary view that for startups to be successful they need to get on board the Trump train. Yes, there are the big name folks who everyone knows about and who didn't really surprise anyone—Peter Thiel, Marc Andreessen, David Sacks, Elon Musk (pre-fallout)—but the more troubling trend has been watching younger entrepreneurs and VCs listen to their podcasts, read their posts and books, and slowly nod along to the idea that democracy is holding back innovation.

Emergence, like fluid dynamics emerging from large numbers of atoms, is pretty familiar. Two descriptions of the same system, but one is approximate and higher-level. Duality is weird. Two descriptions of the same system, but both descriptions are precisely as good. Nothing approximate about it.

AI is a tool (sorry!) that people who are bad at their jobs will use badly and that people who are good at their jobs will maybe, possibly find some uses for. People who are terrible at their jobs (many executives), will tell their employees that they “need” to use AI, that their jobs depend on it, that they must become more productive, and that becoming an AI-first company is the strategy that will save them from the old failed strategy, which itself was the new strategy after other failed business models.

The only journalism business strategy that works, and that will ever work in a sustainable way, is if you create something of value that people (human beings, not bots) want to read or watch or listen to, and that they cannot find anywhere else.

Panel 1: A swordsman with a short, ragged red cape, 2 brown belts, and a shoulderpad, stands with a wide stance and his sword drawn in his right hand. We see him from behind the shoulder of his opponent, who seems to be wearing blue. Something is written on the red swordsman's chest, illegible from this distance.

Panel 2: We zoom in. What's written on the red swordsman's chest is "GOOD". He says "We could have been friends, you know."

Panel 3: The perspective is turned as his opponent is revealed to be wearing a long blue cloak and rectangular framed glasses. The wind billows his cloak.

Panel 4: The blue swordsman shifts his cloak to draw his sword, which glints in the sunlight with a "shiiiiing". It is revealed that on his chest is written "PERFECT". He responds: "No. We couldn't have."

At the DeSantis Everglades detention camp, people with green cards are being held in terrible conditions, with maggots in the food, the lights kept on 24 hours a day, and delayed access to medicine. One guy had his Bible taken and was told "here there is no right to religion."
"I am Leamsy La Figura. We've been here at Alcatraz since Friday. There's over 400 people here. There's no water to take a bath, it's been four days since I've taken a bath," he said.

He claimed the food at the immigration facility is scarce and unsanitary.

"They only brought a meal once a day and it had maggots. They never take off the lights for 24 hours. The mosquitoes are as big as elephants," La Figura said.

Detainees say rights are being violated
Other detainees echoed La Figura's concerns, alleging violations of their basic rights.

"They're not respecting our human rights," one man said during the same call. "We're human beings; we're not dogs. We're like rats in an experiment."

"I don't know their motive for doing this, if it's a form of torture. A lot of us have our residency documents and we don't understand why we're here," he added.

A third detainee, who said he is Colombian, described deteriorating mental health and lack of access to necessary medical care.

"I'm on the edge of losing my mind. I've gone three days without taking my medicine," he said. "It's impossible to sleep with this white light that's on all day."

He also claimed his Bible was confiscated.

"They took the Bible I had and they said here there is no right to religion. And my Bible is the one thing that keeps my faith, and now I'm losing my faith," he said.

What transit experts generally tell you is: the highest use of scarce resources is making transit service more *frequent & reliable*. That's what actually boosts ridership. Everything else -- free point-of-use fare, electric buses, fancy new trolleys, architecturally fancy stations -- matters less.
