The book ends by suggesting a different understanding of the history of modern technology: one where questions of social order, power, and the self were worked out around failing machines as well as working ones. And one that can point us to other, more hopeful ways of living with our technologies.

Edward Jones-Imhotep @ejonesimhotep.bsky.social · 19/05/2026
And Chapter 5 turns to the Cold War. Focusing on a forgotten episode in the history of electronics—The Reliability Crisis—it shows how military planners understood failing electronics as a problem of the self, and specifically a problem of making Western democratic citizens *think* in reliable ways.

Edward Jones-Imhotep @ejonesimhotep.bsky.social · 19/05/2026
Chapter 4 turns to the history of a famous graph—the Gantt Chart. Introduced at the turn of the 20th century, the graph was designed to make factory workers *feel* the breakdowns of their machines, linking two types of failure: failure as a mechanical event, and failure as a kind of person.
120
Edward Jones-Imhotep @ejonesimhotep.bsky.social · 19/05/2026
Chapter 3 pauses to tell an alternative history. Before “breakdowns” were either mechanical events or psychic crises, they were celebratory dances performed by enslaved Americans during a pause in harvest labor, linking subversive dance to labor suspensions, material disruption, and Black freedom.

Edward Jones-Imhotep @ejonesimhotep.bsky.social · 19/05/2026
Chapter 2 turns to Victorian railway accidents. It explores how a group of British railway inspectors in the 1840s created a new category of accident—the system accident—as a way of protecting notions of Victorian responsibility, helping to create a modern understanding of "systems" in the process.

Edward Jones-Imhotep @ejonesimhotep.bsky.social · 19/05/2026
Chapter 1 looks at how anxieties about the real and potential breakdown of the guillotine were not concerns about criminal suffering, like we previously thought. They were anxieties about the effects of a failing machine on the sentimental selves that underpinned the French Revolution.
110
Edward Jones-Imhotep @ejonesimhotep.bsky.social · 19/05/2026
It argues that, rather than interrupting social order, technological breakdowns have historically been used to *extend* it by defining the kinds of people at the center of powerful social visions.

Author copies have arrived! In The Broken Machine, I explore what happens when our technologies break. Drawing on five episodes from the modern Atlantic World, I argue that breakdowns have historically helped define who belongs to the social order and who's outside it. #histtech #histsci #HistSTM
