Day 3 of lycée student protests on my street: Have spent the morning with the windows shut tight against tear gas and smoke, slowly working through an interviewer’s questions about my Safe Place for Science fellowship.

If I owed you an email today, I didn't send it because I spent the morning (a) flooding my apartment and (b) fixing the clothes washer. Accomplishment net zero? (I found the main shutoff valve before the floodwaters made it out of the kitchen to the wood floors)Ph
Photograph of the side of a small French clothes washer with the panel removed. The belt that turns the wheel that turns the drum so that clothes are actually agitated rather than just sitting in soapy water for three hours has been reattached. Other than flooding the laundry room, I'm very proud of myself.

This Day in Labor History: September 13, 1990. The mostly Black workforce at Delta Pride Catfish in Indianola, Mississippi walked off the job in revolt over the working conditions they faced. Let's talk about this key moment of civil rights unionism against a racist employer!

Very few things on the internet brought me joy back in 2020 but witnessing this unfold in realtime was by far the most delightful. * some weird context: my family was getting a private tour of our university's milking barn and I bumped into more than one cow because I was staring at my phone

There's lots to love about the public transit in Toulouse but my favorite thing is that each metro car has a padded butt rail to lean on, aloofly. I've never been so cool on a commute. Also, there's unsettling art in the stations!
A photograph of a large (like, 20 feet high) cement mushroom-like tree on the metro platform at Mirail-Univeristé station in Toulouse. On the floor and in the background is grey and white tile and paneling.

Today has been a lot of stupid bureaucratic hurdles and webforms requiring resets and nothing just being straightforward and easy. I throw in the towel on productivity and pull out the whole-grain rice mix thingy for an easy dinner base. Only to discover the cooking instructions are in Flemish.

Woke up to blessedly cool, breezy air. But it smells like wildfire smoke and I fear the Pink City will only grow pinker in the coming days.

A few years ago, one of the TSA guys at our little airport said I always walked up to his perch like I owned the place. I guess I have an city stride, swing my arms vigorously, and am often spaced out, which probably comes across as aloof. My step matches whatever music I’m listening to. 1/5

Of course the wind-and-thunderstorm breaking a brutal week of high temps descends on Berlin as an interdimensional portal over Schlachtensee. I have no idea how my phone camera did this. A perfectly exhilarating end to an exhilarating sound studies workshop.
Photograph of Schlachtensee during sunset right as a windstorm hit, breaking the week of brutal temerpatures in Berlin. Somehow managed to wobble the camera so that it looks like a swirling inter dimensional portal is descending on the lake. Swirling black, leafy trees in the foreground. Blue-grey lake in the middle ground. Grunewald and blush of setting sun in the background.

Okay, nerds! Our local bookstore owners retired & sold off their wooden bookshelves cheap. I bought EIGHT. We're lining the sitting room in our cabin with them, including framing the entryways to make... book tunnels! Anyway, so many books and so much shelving, so... how should I organize them?!
Panoramic photo of three walls of a dark red room. There are six tall wooden bookshelves. Around the opening to the dining room, a tunnel has been framed (to be added to the other two openings). Lots of yellows and medium browns and dark reds.

You want to see Norway men’s national football team’s official photo for World Cup 2026 www.nytimes.com/athletic/733...
members of the Norway men’s national football team on a rocky shore, styled as a fierce group of ancient Vikings. They are dressed in elaborate historical costumes, including fur-trimmed capes, leather tunics, chainmail, and armor pieces, while holding traditional gear like circular wooden shields, spears, axes, swords, and blowing horns. In the background, longships rest on a calm body of water that cuts through a vast, dramatic fjord. The rugged landscape is framed by massive, steep green mountains, with a thin waterfall cascading down a cliff face on the left, all under a cloudy, overcast sky.

Arrived super early at the mechanic’s in the hopes of getting through a brake inspection quickly. The waiting area reeks of tire rubber, I can see mechanics smoking and pounding energy drinks in the bay, and I’m realizing I only have 2 crayons in my bag for marking up the book I brought to work on.

202 years ago today, this stork was shot in the village of Klütz in northern Germany. It already had a 30-inch arrow in its neck. The arrow was made of African wood, and this first ‘Pfeilstorch’ (‘arrow stork’) played a pivotal role in the understanding of bird migration.
A stuffed stork with an arrow through its neck – it’s that very stork, now found in the zoological collection at the University of Rostock.

When I think about Ted Turner: as I stroll/sprint through ATL, I’m bemused/irked that the “Walk Through Atlanta History” in the corridor between Concourse B and Concourse C devotes the same amount of wall space to Reconstruction as it does to Ted Turner bringing the 1996 Olympics Games to Atlanta.

Was revisiting one of my favorite bird song diagrams (by Doc Allen two years before his Cornell Lab developed techniques for recording birds in the field) and stumbled on this hilarious and crushing belittling of Greater Yellowlegs as too boring to kill. #envhum #histsci #histstm #envhist
Image of a series of representations of the sounds of seven bird species. First they are listed with various dashes or squiggly lines next to them. Then they are listed by mnemonics (the chickadee says “Phe-be-be”). From “Learning Bird Songs” in The Book of Bird Life by Arthur Allen (1930)A black and white photograph of a Yellowlegs bird wading ing the water near a grassy shore in the foreground. The caption reads: AN UNSATISFACTORY GAME BIRD The Yellowlegs is not prolific, it is not wary, it is not resourceful, and little skill is required to shoot it. Its food habits are somewhat beneficial, and it should be removed from the game list.
