9/30/26, Somerville, MA -- The War on Halloween has begun.
Photo of the dairy case at Somerville, MA, Market Basket, on Wednesday, 30 September 2026. The middle shelf is entirely filled with half-gallon cartons of Hood brand Golden Eggnog. (On the shelf just above, there is more eggnog -- of different flavors, including Pumpkin.)

"We're number one!" Paul Szep on defense spending and domestic cuts, September 1973.
Cartoon shows a giant in military uniform, holding a gun labeled "defense spending." The gun has a cork on a string, with the cork labeled "keep America strong." In the background President Nixon is swinging a club with "domestic cuts" written on it at a civilian.

A while ago I got asked by a newspaper writer to comment on the weirdness of Steve Ditko's artwork. He used pretty much none of my response... but I posted it on my blog. Check it out, Ditko heads! #Ditko #Comics www.benzilla.com/?p=8080

Why is Steve Ditko’s Art so Weird-Looking?
I recently received an inquiry from a writer at the Daily Telegraph, asking me a few questions about Steve Ditko’s art style for an article he was working on–presumably to coincide with…

I love comics. I make comics. I don't have time, though, to READ all the comics. Or even know all the comics titles that are coming out. Please be kind when I tell you that I dont even KNOW what's on TV any more. Considering that there are 100 channels or more these days....

WELL NOW, would you look at that? A massive, 26-YEAR-LONG study of MORE THAN 2.4 MILLION people in Sweden found NO EVIDENCE to support a causal link between acetaminophen (the API in Tylenol) use during pregnancy and increased risk of autism, ADHD, OR intellectual disability in children.

I've been on the internet a very long time, and I've had more "what on god's green earth are you even talking about" moments in the last 2 years than in the previous 20. Just absolutely baffling non sequiturs, straw men, logical fallacies, malicious misconstructions, you name it. We are unwell.

People have been anthropomorphizing computers since computers. But now it’s responding like a human by design. Don’t refer to it, and instruct it to not refer to the itself, in the first person - sage advice. And if you need to curse at it, call it Dario, Sam, Elon, or Demis.

Today is the birthday of cartoonist. Ham Fisher (Sept. 24, 1900-Dec. 27, 1955). He created the comic strip Joe Palooka, which was adapted into a radio show, films, comic books, and a tv series.
A black and white photo of Fisher drawing Joe.A Joe Palooka comic from when he was serving in WWII. He is firing a gun at Hitler's feet, forcing him to dance. Hitler is shouting "Haf a heart, Joe! Mine goose step ain't vot it used to be!"

I'm belatedly posting a plein air painting I made on 8/18 with my New England Watercolor Society colleagues, this one done at the Gardens at Elm Bank in Wellesley, MA. Waaay at the back, beyond the decorative gardens, is a vegetable garden with corn & pumpkin. Thus I call this piece "Two Sisters."

The image is of a four panel comic.
In the first panel we see Sarah, the protagonist, next to a stick figure labeled “AI”. The stick figure says, “my outputs look just like yours now.”
The second panel zooms in on Sarah’s face. Above her we see text reading “I think”.
The third panel zooms in closer on Sarah’s face. Text above her reads “you missed”.
The fourth panel shows Sarah drawing happily in a sunlit room. The text above her reads “the point”.

Today is the birthday of cartoonist Will Elder (Sept. 22, 1921-May 15, 2008).
A photo of young Will acting goody. He is sitting front of drawings of wings and a halo and making a silly face.Mad #5, with a cover by Will. When it was still a comic book, about two years away from becoming a magazine. There is a private eye named Kane Keen sitting on his desk. His face is covered in lipstick from kisses by the redhead holding him in her arms. The cover is filled with of the sort of details he is known for. There are several monsters in the room, including one who looks like she is going to give him a manicure but is about to light his fingernails on fire. There is also a body in the floor with several knives sticking out and an axe in its head. There is also a hangman in the back holding a noose, and there is the body of some goulish woman hanging from it.

I used to tell my Cartooning students that fine artists look down on illustrators, and illustrators look down on cartoonists. They would ask who cartoonists look down on. "Pornographers," I'd reply Of course that's an oversimplification.

Tezuka was Tezuka because of his deep knowledge of Disney and other "Western" cartoonists. So of course he knew about the ZZZs -- it's not like the letter Z is in Japanese writing.
