I’m not usually a believer in divine signs, but if someone survives lethal injection the government should probably let them go.

This was the content of an email sent from someone I knew to a group of our mutual friends on 9/11, before the sender knew if my family and I had been killed, and it still stings.

The common thread in Pete Hegseth's rant to the troops, JD Vance suggesting Talarico is a pedophile, Brendan Carr calling the Trump ads aired with tax dollars "normal force PSAs," and Eric Schmitt fabricating a Jack Smith conspiracy is the whole GOP is incentivized to be performatively evil.

It’s not that I didn’t realize some people were motivated by that, but I didn’t realize how prevalent it was.

Watching The Big Sleep (1946) in 1986 is the equivalent of watching Top Gun (1986) today, in 2026.

One of the more unhappy lessons of the Trump era (for me) was realizing how many people motivated to seek power and wealth are not driven by greed or self-interest so much as by a desire to dominate and exploit others.

I’d add that calling someone a dirtbag is counterproductive because without showing facts that lead your audience to conclude that on their own, name-calling blows your own credibility (and even has that effect when you *do* show those facts).

Funniest part to me is Jack Smith using 110% of his lawyer brain. He avoids making the connection himself; he doesn't even say "Hawkeyes," he just says "Iowa." He knows it's better to let everyone figure it out on their own. He also knows from Klobuchar's grin that she'll dunk it for him.

One particularly irritating habit of LLMs is their desire to tell and repeat everything they believe they know, like a so-so student writing an essay exam. It may be too granular or completely irrelevant to the question or wrong, but it is a thing is believes and you’re going to hear about it.

I’ve now seen what appears to be a demand letter from a lawyer written by an LLM. Summarizing information but failing to explain context in ways that make reading it feel like a fever dream. ☠️

Do you believe things like contemporary Hindutva are influenced by American theology or is it that chauvinism with a religious aspect has universal appeal, like junk food?

It really doesn't make sense to attribute those job losses to AI-the-technology, because if that were the case we'd be observing AI outputs displacing conventional entertainment products, and they're clearly not. Rather, the impact of AI is that AI-the-business is crowding out other investment.

It would have to make funding non-economical, not just embarrassing. And so probably not effective if the company is drowning in billions of dollars.

With enough big settlements and forced resignations, I expect VC funds will spread the message that this isn’t compatible with a company doing a Series A. No idea if we’re close to that threshold yet.

There are, of course, a *lot* of laws that provide recourse for victims of the kinds of things broadly encompassed by “quasi mandatory office sex party,” no need to boil the ocean.

I use a different legal AI service (although I don’t recommend relying on its legal analysis for anything but a starting point). Still, this isn’t a hard question (“California / Ninth Circuit law. Is it permissible to invite company employees to a sex party?”).
Ethan, from an employer risk-and-compliance standpoint, the answer is: strongly inadvisable, and legally dangerous. There is no per se statute that says "you may not invite employees to a sex party," but doing so as an employer, manager, or supervisor exposes the company to liability under multiple independent FEHA and Title VIl theories — hostile work environment, quid pro quo harassment, retaliation, and the statutory failure-to-prevent duty. California law is markedly more employer-adverse than federal law here, and the employer's exposure for a supervisor's conduct is strict — no knowledge or negligence required. The narrow scenarios in which such an invitation escapes liability (a genuinely private, off-hours relationship unconnected to work; a truly isolated, non-severe, non-coercive one-off with no adverse follow-up) are fact-dependent, unreliable to plan around, and easy to lose.
Below is the governing framework and where the real risk lives.

Startups often don’t hire full-time GCs until they reach a certain size, so there are fractional GCs / outside counsel preparing memos. Or, I suspect, not being asked for any advice in advance and then dealing with claims afterward.
