🔔 NEW   Community perspectives on health needs and assets in underserved Dublin areas: a participatory qualitative study   ✍️ Eunice Phillip, Sally Griffin, Eisten Keogh, Amir Bachari, Talent Nyamakope, Fiona McDonnell, Joanna Kelly, Craig Smith, Debbi Stanistreet   OA doi.org/10.1093/heapro/daaf232
This study shows that meaningful community engagement provides deeper insights into the complex, interconnected health and social challenges faced by underserved populations. Addressing these issues requires integrated, multi-sectoral pathways, with local government tackling immediate place-based determinants and national policy addressing structural drivers, such as inequitable resource distribution, inadequate housing and gaps in essential services, a whole-of-government commitment.

"A possible future president steps out of the car in Dublin's North East Inner City. "My son takes her by the hand and invites her outside to play ball." Niamh McDonald writes about canvassing for Catherine Connolly and how to turn fear into hope. jrnl.ie/6863532

Canvasser: I knocked on over a thousand doors and learned to turn fear into hope. Here's how.
In communities that have long been ignored by politics, it’s more important than ever to get out and talk to people, writes Niamh McDonald.

I'd like to know more about how exactly they derived that headline finding - the report says "According to this study, 22% of respondents with children under four years old do not read for joy, which we can interpret as not being read to." This interpretation seems to be doing some heavy lifting

We found that future need for stroke care will depend on whether stroke risk continues to decline or not, and at what rate. Even in the most optimistic scenario, need for stroke care will increase, especially for poststroke dementia. In a pessimistic scenario, need could increase by 50%.

In optimistic scenario for improvements in prevention, it could stay about the same as today. In more pessimistic scenarios, it could go up by ~60%. In ANY scenario, post-stroke dementia will increase. We need to maximise prevention, and plan to increase service capacity
