The government has a new accounting measure called OBEGALx. It's the measure you use when you can't get the books to add up the way you would like. I guess it goes with FERRIESx and CHILDPOVERTYTARGETSx and HOUSESINAUCKLANDx. I'm giving this government a giant ❌ for its performance this year.
Screen shot of an NZ Herald headline: "No surplus in sight: Creative accounting used to mask deterioration in Govt books."

Following the New Zealand government's innovative OBEGALx measure, I am proud to announce the M-Index. Unlike the H-Index, which takes into account all papers, the M-Index only takes into account papers written by or citing me, making me the world's top scholar according to this measure

So the economy was sluggish in 2022/23 but now it’s in deep recession, entirely on National’s and Nicola Willis’ watch. They should be utterly ashamed. Economy back in recession as GDP shrinks by 1% www.rnz.co.nz/news/busines...

Shane Jones is sad that oil and gas companies aren’t coming over to his yard to play, so he's pitching New Zealand to pick up the tab and play the risk game instead. #nzpol #cartoon #Listener
Cartoon depicts a variation on the Trolley Problem. In this case the out-of-control trolley labelled 'Climate Change' is on fire barrelling towards an obese wealthy man tied up on the tracks labelled 'Oil and Gas' (industry). He is smoking a cigar with champagne and using a bullhorn to yell "yes, yes, save me! I'm facing an existential crisis". NZFirst Party politician Shane Jones is rushing towards the switch ( labelled 'subsidies' ), yelling "I'll save you". attempting to redirect the trolley to instead run over a dozen Kiwi birds (representing the natural world endangered by National Party''s careless Fast Track legislation. Heading: 'The Gas Powered Trolley Problem'. Refers to suggestion that oil exploration would only be undertaken if the New Zealand government were to underwrite all the costs and risks.

Remember the old ‘fiscal cliff’ excuse? Good times. #coalition #excuses #austerity #nzpol #repost #cartoon
Cartoon depicts a crumbling rocky cliff and two people walking off the edge poised to fall. NZ National Party leader Christopher Luxon is tossing up a cricket ball ready with a bat "I can keep smashing out the big promises while we're still on such a firm budget footing right, Nicola?" Deputy leader Nicola Willis is clutching at pages with figures dropping into thin air below. Landscape features resemble style of Road Runner cartoons.

It reads, “Anti Red Tape Bill Not Needed” He’s saying, “Grrrr This is not what I asked for”. Last frame shows him miserable, with his head in his hands. Brooke Van Velden is standing beside him, saying, “Never mind, David, I’ve invented some employment law to deal with that”

Cartoon. Title: On the Bridge of the Ferry Simulator. Picture shows Winston Peters as Napolean, Nicola Willis hunting for the Start Button, and PM Christopher Luxon looking like it’s a genius plan, but pressing the Autopilot button by mistake. But at least you can’t sink a simulator.

My cartooning today's www.thepost.co.nz/nz-news/3605... It's pantomime time! Cinderella Nicola Willis in her fancy princess dress telling everyone that the bad times are behind us... the ugly sisters though have other plans... #NzPol #HalfYearBudget #Pantomime #panto2024
Cartoon title: Let the good times roll...

A theatre stage with the pantomime Cinderella is taking place. No one is in the audience. The only person who is saying things are good is Cinderella aka Nicola Willis. She's twirling happily saying, "the bad times are behind us!" But we, the audience, wanna shout "no! They're behind you!" Which she would want to say, of course they are. But we see the two ugly sisters standing fiercely with tattoos on their arms. 'Rising unemployment' on one arm and 'stagnating economy' on the other. The good times aren't coming. The good times won't be here for a very very long time.
