Eike Exner @eikeexner.com · 38mThis book is not only informative but also highly entertaining. The dry wit with which Hayakawa dissects the absurdity of fascist ideology and propaganda occasionally made me laugh out loud. Highly recommend. Bizarre that so many want to go back to the kind of dystopia the book examines. 072

Eike Exner @eikeexner.com · 23/09/2026The claims are that Mizuki was as influential as Tezuka, which there is little basis for, but at least that's somewhat subjective. The one that made me block was about how BUF appeared in a newspaper started by foreigners. Given your follower count I think you should be a bit more careful. 100
Eike Exner @eikeexner.com · 23/09/2026It was an image and two social media posts iirc, though the final straw was a post with some false claims about Bringing Up Father. Eike Exner @eikeexner.com · 23/09/2026It's just not true and I wish he'd stop claiming that. Mizuki was popular but not that influential. I mean, just look at how unique his style is. 000
Eike Exner @eikeexner.com · 22/09/2026It helps that almost all of Tezuka's works are easily accessible, while the vast majority from that period isn't. 120
Eike Exner @eikeexner.com · 22/09/2026Imho it's usually because that's all people know about the early postwar. Heck, well known academics can't even tell the 1947 New Treasure Island apart from its 1984 remake, so the bar is low, and as long as you say Tezuka changed everything or "created modern manga" or whatever you look in the know 100
Eike Exner @eikeexner.com · 22/09/2026But he was one of several influential creators and his impact has definitely been exaggerated. I'm not the first to make this point, but you *can* tell the history of manga without Tezuka (as Yonezawa does in his baseball-focused history). 010
Eike Exner @eikeexner.com · 22/09/2026He certainly was influential and reading stuff like Jungle Emperor in the context of its time reveals it to be avantgarde, like killing off a major character early on and then following their child instead. So he definitely did help expand the boundaries of what was considered doable in comics. 200
Eike Exner @eikeexner.com · 22/09/2026In the 1930s, it was pretty common in animated cartoons to visualize breathing during sleep, e.g. via characters blowing out puffs of air. Since babies can inflate snot bubbles while sleeping, an animator probably got the idea from that and it gradually caught on, moving to the page around 1950. 010
Eike Exner @eikeexner.com · 22/09/2026This entire comic is visually impressive for its time, I'm surprised I've never come across this artist (Segoshi Ken) anywhere else. It also shows Disney and animation influence without any Tezuka influence, another bit of evidence that Tezuka's role in manga's development has been exaggerated. 140
