(This is also the basis of my argument that Anri is overtuned. I like easy mode but I also could not help but notice that basically all I had to do was duck at the appropriate times while Anri assiduously tore Sulyvahn apart. Sulyvahn is Fume Knight! He shouldn’t be that easy even with a summon!)

Just after Central Irithyll bonfire — the first one after the bridge — you meet the “wake-up call” squad of Knights. If you close on them to the absolute maximum distance and begin a spell attack, they’ll turn around, see you, and be on you before you’ve finished the cast

Anyway back to the Pontiff Knights — I have not so far figured out how to slot into their attack pattern in a way that makes it safe to engage them at melee range. But you also can’t engage them using ranged weapons because they can leap an entire block in two seconds

It makes slightly more sense because the Tinder is a catalyst, so at least you can assume they’re using some kind of Fire Witch-exclusive telekinesis spell, as opposed to the Pursuer, who is ostensibly just buffing a fairly ordinary Greatsword with perfectly ordinary Dark Weapon

While we’re on the subject of hitbox pedantry I do think it’s very funny that the one other major non-trash mob in Irithyll, the Fire Witch, can use their Immolation Tinder to execute what is obviously the Pursuer’s dodgy ass command grab. Same animation and everything, it’s not even sped up

Pontiff Knights invariably travel in packs that it’s somewhat difficult to get them out of, have intricately interlocking aggro grids, hit you for like half your HP (at 27 Vigor), and can arbitrarily extend the range of their swords (this is not hitbox pedantry, they visibly extend the blade)

It was easier for me to survive Sulyvahn than it is for me to survive any single one of his principal underlings

i once read a "restorative justice" paper about catholic priests outed for CSA and how it's so cruel and terrible to ostracize or make them feel bad for doing something that "has been considered normal and harmless throughout history, think of the ancient greeks etc." think of their emotional pain

i've been trying to articulate for years how the discourse around rape and abuse treats it as an abstract matter of moral taste. there are abstractly "im/moral" ways to treat a thing, but the moral weight rests of whether it's "allowed" or "not allowed," not on the victim's inviolable personhood.

in this story she is about as relevant as a "dead wife" in a nolan movie, in the sense that her existence does not extend beyond the hero's emotional backstory. she is not a real person. she has no interiority, no subjective experience, and CERTAINLY no rights, least of all any right to justice.

this is the way many people view SA. not as an act of violence against a PERSON, much less as a technology of oppression, but as a story event in the moral arc of HIS life. the inciting incident of a redemption play. he's the protagonist, she's barely even a supporting character. she's a trope.
