Um, we have screen locking? The real clever bit was Pawsense in 2006 - displays "Cat-like typing detected" and locks in response to key patterns...

This is not how I usually find new places for icecream.thok.org but apparently they just opened August 1, so it hasn't percolated through my other sources (it's also made cbs news, boston 25, patch... so maybe I should hold off a week before trying it :-)

There was a kickstarter for .meow that apparently made it into this round. Expensive, but (maybe) doable.

Great, another grudge to hold about GenAI: it caused me to be reminded that PewDiePie exists. (thanks fireship)

I dug into this a little after seeing them in Sweden of all places: they were popular gifts between royal courts! The swedish ones were a gift from a German court, and the current population (30k) descends from 5 individuals. (European royal levels of inbreeding too, confirmed by genetic testing :)

I think this was sunset orange light hitting upper cloud layers which were then visible through gaps in the lower ones. Kind of looks more like oil paint "happy accidents" than a real scene though :-)

The inverse of this is why a public observatory I worked with built a fiber optic eyepiece extender so kids in wheelchairs could see the "actual light" and not be stuck with screens. (Of course the Real Work was mostly done on screens, it was about making the "sense of wonder" more accessible)

Just to close the loop on this: maps.here.com?map=45.66387... now shows "Lake America". So it looks like the theory that "they were just slower than everybody else about processing NGIA/NGP updates" held up.

TODAY'S COMIC: Crabby
PANEL 1: A red-orange crab stands on sand with a blue sky behind him. Next to him is a paper coffee cup with lid and a brown sleeve.
CRAB: Before Coffee: Crabby.

PANEL 2: The same scene.
CRAB: After coffee: STILL CRABBY.

PANEL 3: The same scene, the crab stares at the viewer.

PANEL 4: The crab turns to the side, thoughtfully.
CRAB: …but better able to articulate why.

I sometimes do the "right place for the wrong reason" thing - they're not in the place for what they *are* but they're in a staging area for the project (or what I thought was one except I accidentally two staging areas and it's in the other one.) When I find them, it makes retroactive sense...

They didn't go nearly far enough with that in Highlander, just had Connery throw him off the boat and make him figure out for himself that he could just walk to shore. Didn't even pull any swords from shipwrecks :-)
